Song Meaning

Meaning 1

A catchy-but-superficial song about meeting someone in a bar & having sex with them and then wanting more sex. How about, “I’m in love with your mind”, or “I’m in love with your heart”? No, it all comes down to shallow lust. A shallow song for a shallow, ‘hook-up’ culture, where everyone is in love with themselves—or more accurately: in love with the image of themselves that they carefully craft & present to their social media network.

As for their connections to other people, well, that’s just attention-deficit-disordered, flash-in-the-pan crushes & instant-gratification horniness. Another swipe on their smartphone will soon present a different body for them to lust after in the never-ending flesh parade. Real, lasting relationships are dying, and people rarely sing about love these days—just hooking up. Pretty gross & sad, when you stop and think about it. But the young people grooving to songs like this are too young to have any perspective on what is happening, or where their shallow culture is leading them.

Meaning 2

“Shape Of You has more of a modern R’n’B vibe a la previous hit Don’t with more tales from the bedroom, these ones minus any bitterness or F-bombs.

The song tells the story of loved (or lusted) up Sheeran meeting a girl in a bar (“The club isn’t the best place to find a lover”) where he and his mates are doing shots.

Soon you’re in bed with Ed as he takes both male and female narratives singing with himself (in his falsetto) “Girl you know I want your love, your love was handmade for somebody like me” then “Boy let’s not talk too much, grab on my waist and put that body on me, come on follow my lead.”

Other lyrics include “last night you were in my room, now my bed sheets smell like you” and “I’m in love with your body, every day discovering something brand new, I’m in love with the shape of you”.
