Essay:
“Clever Maggie of Tollishill”
Have you ever read a legend? In the old Scottish legend “Clever Maggie of Tollishil”, the author Marilyn Helmer describes her character Maggie’s determination in three ways. Maggie shows that when she sets her mind to something, no one can stop her. Maggie also shows that she finishes what she started. Like when no one was paying the rent but Maggie saved up her money and paid him even though no one else was.
The first way Maggie showed determination was by not giving up. The text stated that in paragraph four Maggie said, “We’ll not give up the farm, Thomas. Not after all the work we’ve put into it.” When someone wants to show determination they won’t give up. In paragraph four itt stated that Maddie showed determination and would not give up to save her farm no matter what.
The second way that Maggiie showed determination was that she finished what she started. In paragraph twenty one Maddie showed that she finished what she started by walking four hundred miles from Scotland to London just to pay the rent to the earl even though everyone else wasn’t. I know people show determination by finishing what they started no matter what. The text stated that she walked four hundred miles just to pay the rent to the earl. Maggie showed that she finished what she started.
The third way that Maggie showed determination was by trying to do the impossible. In paragraph eleven the earl stated, “Bring me a snowball in June, and I’ll consider your rent paid in full.” Then Maggie showed determination by saying, “Thank you, sir, you shall have your snowball in June.” You should always try to do the impossible even if everyone says you can’t do it. The earl said that she couldn’t do it, but Maggie didn’t let that bring her down and she did the impossible.
To sum it up, Maggie showed determination in three different ways. By not giving up to save the farm. Maggie also showed it by finishing what she started like when she walked four hundred miles just to pay the rent for the earls freedom. Maggie also showed determination by trying to do the impossible. Like when the earl said she can’t bring him a snowball in June. But Maggie showed him that he was wrong and brought him a snowball in June.
