Step 1: UNDERSTAND THE LEARNING GOALS

Your teacher will explain what you’re going to learn from the project. These goals will be connected to what you’re supposed to learn in your grade level.

Step 2: GET CURIOUS ABOUT A QUESTION

During the second stage of the project you will choose a big, interesting question that your project will help answer. This question is meant to get you thinking and asking more questions. We have included 10 projects ideas as a starting point. You can discuss these ideas with your teacher as well as your XTutor before you decide on a final question.

Project Topics and Driving Questions to Start From:

Step 3: PLAN YOUR PROJECT

With help from your XTutor or teacher, you and your classmates will plan out your project. This includes deciding what tasks need to be done, when they should be finished, and what materials you might need.

Remember: You can ask your XTutor to help you to create an action plan.

Step 4: START YOUR PROJECT

Your teacher will kick off the project, going over the big question, the project requirements, and the timeline. Then, it’s time to get started!

Step 5: LEARN AND EXPLORE

You and your classmates will work together to research the big question and learn new things. Your teacher will help guide you, but you’ll have a lot of control over where your learning goes.

Remember: Your XTutor is always here to help guide you with any questions or difficulties you might have.

Step 6: CHECK YOUR PROGRESS

Your teacher will check in with you regularly to see how you’re doing, give you feedback, and help you if you’re stuck. It’s important to make sure you stay on schedule and on task.

Step 7: SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW

Throughout the project, you’ll show your teacher what you’re learning through smaller assignments. At the end, you’ll complete a final project or test to show everything you’ve learned. You and your classmates can also create quick presentations to showcase the knowledge you have gained as well small quizzes to test each other’s understanding of the topic.

Step 8: SHARE YOUR WORK

Once your project is finished, you’ll share it with your classmates, your school, or even your community. This could be a presentation, a demonstration, or a showcase of your work.

Step 9: REFLECT ON YOUR LEARNING

After the project, you’ll think about what you learned, what you liked, what was hard, and how you can use your new knowledge in the future.

Step 10: REVIEW THE PROJECT

Finally, you’ll think about the project as a whole. What worked well? What didn’t? How can you do better on the next project? This will help you do even better on your next PBL project.

Project Ideas:

1. Alphabet Adventure: Embark on a journey to explore each letter of the alphabet! For each letter, choose a theme (like animals or food) and create a mini-book. Draw or find pictures of objects starting with that letter and write a simple sentence or two about each one. Put all the mini-books together to create your very own Alphabet Adventure book!

2. Storytime Puppet Show: Choose a favorite storybook and work with your classmates to create puppets of the main characters. Then, practice reading the story aloud and perform a puppet show for your friends and family. Don’t forget to make your puppets move and speak, just like the characters in the story!

3. Sight Word Scavenger Hunt: Take your sight word learning to a whole new level with a scavenger hunt! Create flashcards with sight words and hide them around your classroom or playground. Split into teams and race to find as many sight words as possible. When you find a word, read it aloud and keep track of how many you found. The team with the most words wins!

4. Story Sequencing Collage: Choose a favorite story and create a visual representation of the sequence of events. Draw or cut out pictures that represent the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Arrange the pictures in order and glue them onto a poster board. Use your collage to retell the story to your classmates, making sure to explain what happened first, next, and last.

5. Let’s Write a Recipe: Become a chef for a day and write your very own recipe! Choose a favorite dish or a pretend one, and think about all the ingredients and steps needed to make it. Write or dictate the recipe, including a title, list of ingredients, and directions. Share your recipe with your classmates and maybe even try making it at home!

6. Animal Research Project: Become an animal expert by researching and presenting information about your favorite animal. Choose an animal and gather facts about its appearance, habitat, diet, and interesting behaviors. Create a poster or a PowerPoint presentation to share your findings with your classmates. Don’t forget to include pictures or drawings of the animal!

7. Rhyme Time: Practice your rhyming skills by creating a rhyming book! Choose a word, like “cat,” and brainstorm a list of words that rhyme with it, such as “hat,” “mat,” and “rat.” Make a page for each rhyming word and write a simple sentence or two using the word. Illustrate each page with pictures that represent the word. Put all the pages together to create your own Rhyme Time book!

8. Superhero Story: Imagine you are a superhero with your own unique powers. Write a story about a day in the life of your superhero self. Include details about your powers, the challenges you face, and how you save the day. Use your imagination to create exciting adventures and illustrate your story with bold and colorful drawings.

9. Book Character Dress-Up: Choose a favorite book character and dress up as them for a special day at school. Read the book to your classmates, explaining why you love the character and sharing some of their adventures. Get creative with your costume and try to bring the character to life for your classmates to see!

10. Create Your Own Word Puzzle: Flex your vocabulary muscles by creating your very own word puzzle! Choose a grid size (like 5×5 or 6×6) and fill it with letters to create a grid of words. Write a list of clues for each word and challenge your classmates to solve the puzzle. You can even exchange puzzles with your friends and see who can solve them the fastest!
