Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist who played a pivotal role in advancing the civil rights movement in the United States. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, King was the son of a Baptist minister and grew up in a family that valued education and social justice. King attended Morehouse College, where he studied sociology and graduated with honors in 1948. He then went on to study theology and received his Ph.D. from Boston University in 1955. King became a prominent civil rights leader and advocate for nonviolent protest, and his activism was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1963, he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington, calling for an end to racism and for equal rights for all Americans. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, but his legacy as a champion of civil rights and social justice lives on.
