Interview William the Conqueror

William the Conqueror

William the Conqueror, also known as William I, was born in Falaise, Normandy in 1028. He was the son of Duke Robert I of Normandy and Herleva, a tanner’s daughter. After his father’s death, William became the Duke of Normandy at the age of 8. He fought several battles to secure his position as the duke, and by the time he was 20, he had established himself as a powerful ruler. In 1066, William invaded England, claiming that he was the rightful heir to the throne after the death of Edward the Confessor. He defeated King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned King of England on Christmas Day the same year. William brought many changes to England, including the introduction of the Norman feudal system and the building of several castles. Throughout his reign, William faced many challenges, including rebellions and invasions. However, he managed to maintain his power and influence, and his legacy continues to be felt today. William the Conqueror died in 1087, and his body was buried in Caen, Normandy.
