Autobiography of Attila the Hun

Early Life and Ascension

I am Attila, known to many as Attila the Hun. I was born around 406 AD, into the noble family of the Hunnic Empire, a confederation of tribes sprawling over much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the year 434 AD, upon the death of our uncle King Rugila, my brother Bleda and I ascended to rule the Huns together.

Co-rulership with Bleda

For nearly a decade, Bleda and I ruled in tandem, our power unchallenged. Together, we conducted numerous successful campaigns against both the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. We were feared by many and respected by all who knew the might of our horde. Our victories not only expanded the Hunnic territories but also brought immense wealth to our people.

Sole Rule and Expansion

However, in 445 AD, things changed. My brother Bleda died under mysterious circumstances, some say at my hand, and I assumed sole leadership of the Hunnic Empire. My rule marked the zenith of Hunnic power. I led a series of successful invasions against the Eastern Roman Empire, sacking numerous cities and extracting a hefty tribute from the Romans.

Invasion of Gaul and Battle of the Catalaunian Plains

In 451 AD, my sights turned westward. I invaded Gaul (modern-day France), initially with success. However, the Roman general Flavius Aetius, allied with the Visigoths, challenged my forces. We clashed at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Late Antiquity. The battle ended inconclusively, and I withdrew from Gaul.

Invasion of Italy and Negotiations

Undeterred by the setback in Gaul, in 452 AD, I invaded Italy. Despite early successes, we were hindered by famine and disease, and Pope Leo I’s diplomatic mission successfully persuaded me to withdraw.

My Death and Legacy

In 453 AD, after I had returned to my homeland, I died on my wedding night. The exact circumstances of my death remain shrouded in mystery. Following Hunnic tradition, I was buried in a secret location, never to be discovered.

I, Attila, have since been remembered as one of the most feared enemies of the Roman Empire, a reputation that has made me a legend. I was a warrior and a king, leading a nomadic empire that challenged the might of Rome. I stand as a symbol of the unstoppable force and fierce independence of the Huns. Yet, my rule was also marked by strategic political maneuvering and a surprising respect for diplomatic protocols. Through strength and cunning, I carved a powerful empire, the echoes of which still resonate in the annals of history.
