In “The Watermelon Seed Adventure,” Ani introduces young readers to a humorous tale about a crocodile who loves watermelon but accidentally swallows a seed, leading him to fear that a watermelon plant will grow inside him. Ultimately, the seed comes out, and the crocodile learns that while it’s fun to imagine, seeds don’t actually grow in our tummies. The story encourages laughter and curiosity while reassuring children about the nature of seeds.
  1. What is your favorite fruit like the crocodile’s favorite watermelon?
  2. How do you think the crocodile felt when he swallowed the seed?
  3. What do you think would happen if a seed really grew inside someone?

Let’s dive into “The Watermelon Seed” by Greg Pizzoli!

The Watermelon Seed Story

Our friend, the crocodile, loves watermelon so much! He says, “Chomp, chomp, chomp! It’s the best!” Ever since he was a tiny baby crocodile, watermelon has been his favorite. He eats it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert. Yum!

But oh no! The crocodile accidentally swallows a seed! He gets worried and thinks, “Uh-oh, I swallowed a seed! It’s growing in my tummy! Soon, vines will come out of my ears, and my skin will turn pink! I don’t want to be a fruit salad! Help!”

His tummy starts to feel funny, and he gets scared. But guess what? The seed comes out, and he feels much better. He decides, “No more watermelon for me… well, maybe just a teeny tiny bite. Chomp, chomp, chomp!”

Can a Seed Grow Inside You?

When the crocodile swallowed the watermelon seed, he was afraid a watermelon plant would grow inside him. Do you think that could really happen? It’s fun to imagine, but don’t worry, seeds don’t grow inside our tummies like that!

  • Have you ever eaten a watermelon? What do you like most about it, and how do you feel when you eat it?
  • If you could imagine a seed growing into something magical inside you, what would it be and why?
  • Can you think of a time when you were worried about something, like the crocodile was? How did you feel better?
  1. Seed Observation: Let’s explore seeds! Ask an adult to help you find different seeds from fruits or vegetables at home, like apple seeds or pumpkin seeds. Look at them closely. What do they look like? Are they big or small? Draw a picture of each seed you find. Talk about how these seeds grow into plants when they are in the soil, with water and sunlight.

  2. Planting a Seed: With the help of an adult, plant a seed in a small pot or garden. You can use a seed from a fruit you ate, like a watermelon or apple seed. Water it regularly and place it in a sunny spot. Watch it grow over time. Keep a journal with drawings of how your plant changes each week. Discuss what plants need to grow and how they are different from us.

  3. Imaginative Storytelling: Imagine if you could grow a plant from a seed inside you, just like the crocodile thought! What kind of plant would it be? Would it have flowers or fruits? Draw a picture of yourself with the plant growing out of you. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and tell them your story. What would you do with your special plant?
