Learning All Day Long

At Mom University, classes start early in the morning, and moms never get a break, even if they’re not feeling well. They learn to do so many things, like cooking our favorite foods and making us eat our veggies, even the ones that smell funny!

Fun and Important Lessons

Moms learn how to cut sandwiches just the way we like them. They practice making faces that help us listen. There’s even a class on kissing boo-boos and putting on bandages!

They learn how to make us feel better when we’re sick and how to tuck us into bed with lullabies. Moms study hard to know when it’s time for us to rest.

“Mom University,” written by Rebecca Vaughn and illustrated by Daria Shegelev.

Before our mom could take us home, was there a test to pass? Somehow she knows so many things. Did she have to take a class? She must have had some training or a manual to read. Did she have to study? How do moms come to be? Clearly, she prepared for us; we are her specialty. I bet she went to school so she could earn her mom degree.

Class starts early in the morning, and they never get a break. Even if they’re sick, there’s not a day off they can take. Moms must learn to survive without much sleep or rest. It seems like torture, and it is; it’s the hardest part of the test. The moms learn how to cook our favorite foods and treats and to make us try the vegetables that smell funny. She learns how to cut the crust just the way we like. Then they trick her into believing crusts are a tasty delight.

They get quizzed throughout the day. Someone follows them around and asks them questions to get accustomed to the sound. They practice in the mirror each and every day to learn how to make a face that makes us listen right away. There’s a class on kissing all your hurts and putting on bandages too. There’s a class on rubbing sick tummies and comforting you through the flu. They know when it’s time for rest and how to make you close your eyes. They learn to tuck you into bed and sing you lullabies.

The books have been read, her plans have been made. She has almost mastered the gears; she’s as ready as she’ll ever be. Graduation day is near. The big day has come; her work is done. It was worth the pain and strife. Graduation day is here—the best day of mom’s life.

Before our mom could graduate, there was much to learn, you see. But she didn’t have to learn to love us; that came naturally. Moms sure go through a lot to learn so much. I think they deserve a special degree.
