The Adventure of Zuri and Snow

Today, we have a funny story about two chickens named Zuri and Snow. They live in a pretty yard with a cute little house. Their house has everything they need: fresh water, a cozy nest, and yummy chicken food. Their owners love them very much and built a white fence to keep them safe.

Zuri’s Big Adventure

Zuri was a curious chicken. She wanted to see what was outside the fence. Even though she had everything she needed, she wanted to explore more! So, she squeezed through the fence, dreaming of fun adventures like shopping and going to the beach. But, oh no! Her owners fixed the fence with wire, so she couldn’t get out again.

Zuri didn’t give up! She dug a hole under the fence, but her owners filled it up. She couldn’t dig or squeeze through anymore. So, she decided to try flying! She practiced by jumping on a trampoline. One day, she flew over the fence and had a great adventure. She even wore a sun hat!

Snow’s Happy Home

While Zuri was exploring, her friend Snow was happy at home. Snow loved soaking up the warm sun in the yard. Zuri thought she was having all the fun until she heard a scary sound. A big black dog was chasing her! Zuri ran and ran, but she couldn’t remember how to get back through the fence.

The dog grabbed her tail, but the children who loved Zuri came to save her. They picked her up and chased the dog away. Zuri was safe, but her feathers were a bit messy. She realized that home was the best place to be.

Zuri’s Lesson

Zuri learned that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. She was very lucky to have a loving home. She even laid an egg to show how happy she was!

  1. Why do you think Zuri wanted to explore outside the fence even though she had everything she needed at home? Have you ever felt curious about something new? What did you do?
  2. Snow was happy staying at home while Zuri went on an adventure. Which chicken do you think you are more like, Zuri or Snow, and why?
  3. When Zuri got into trouble, her friends helped her. Can you think of a time when you helped a friend or when a friend helped you? What happened?
  1. Chicken Adventure Map: Create a simple map of Zuri and Snow’s yard using paper and crayons. Draw the fence, the chicken house, and any other features you remember from the story. Then, imagine and draw what Zuri might have seen on her adventure outside the fence. Discuss with your friends or family what you think Zuri learned from her adventure.

  2. Role-Playing Game: With your friends or family, act out the story of Zuri and Snow. One person can be Zuri, another can be Snow, and others can be the owners or the dog. Use props like a hat for Zuri’s sun hat or a blanket for the fence. After the play, talk about why Zuri wanted to explore and how she felt when she realized home was the best place to be.

  3. Observation Walk: Take a walk around your neighborhood or garden with an adult. Look for fences and think about why they are there. Are they keeping something in or out? Talk about how fences can keep us safe, just like Zuri’s fence. Discuss what makes your home special and safe, just like Zuri and Snow’s home.

Today, we have a really funny book about an adventurous chicken and her friend. Do you think they might get into trouble? Let’s find out as we read “Zuri and Snow: A Book About Boundaries,” based on a true story by Nikki Rogers.

Once there were two chickens named Zuri and Snow who followed their people wherever they went. They lived in a lovely green yard in a cute little hen house that was nice and clean. In their little house was all they could need: fresh water, a nest box, and some chicken feed. The chickens were much loved, and as a defense, their owners had put up a white picket fence.

Zuri looked through the fence, wanting to explore. She had all she needed but just wanted more. The fence was close, but she squeezed her way through, dreaming of shopping and the beach—oh, the things she could do! But before she could fulfill her adventurous heart’s desire, she was back in her yard, and the gap was fixed with wire.

They had ruined her fun, but she wasn’t defeated. She scratched and dug until a hole was completed. She squirmed under the fence and went on her way, but her hole was filled up on that very same day. She couldn’t dig under, and she couldn’t squeeze through. Flying was the next thing she would try.

She couldn’t fly high yet, but this chicken was keen, so she practiced by jumping on a trampoline. The day finally came when she went for a fly, soaring over the fence to the bright other side. She enjoyed her adventure, so the day after that, she flew over again, wearing her new sun hat.

While Zuri was out exploring, her feathered friend Snow was content being home. Back in the yard, Snow soaked up the warm sun, while Zuri thought she was the one having fun. That was, of course, until she heard a new sound, and her heart nearly stopped. When she turned around, a black dog was running! She had quite a shock and ran this way and that, but with all the stress, she couldn’t remember how to get through that fence.

The chase was exhausting, and she got quite a fright when the dog grabbed her tail. The children who loved her ran to save the day; they picked her up and chased the dog away. Sensible Snow lived without a care while Zuri returned with her feathers a bit ruffled.

Zuri had a stroke of good luck, so she laid an egg with a scratch. The people here loved her; she was very blessed. Finally, she realized home really was best. Zuri found out that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
