Get cozy because we have a fun story to share! Imagine a big storm that brings more than just rain. This storm brings lots of furry friends to a little girl’s doorstep. Let’s read “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” and find out what happens!
The little girl’s grandpa says it’s going to rain cats and dogs in his town. The sky gets dark, and fog rolls in. If you’re allergic to cats and dogs, watch out!
Suddenly, tails peek through the clouds! The girl runs outside to hug all the furry friends. She dries them off and gives them names like Lady, Max, and Pete!
The new friends are hungry, so the girl cooks lunch on the grill. With full tummies, they all cuddle on the floor, enjoying doggy kisses and kitty purrs.
After a nap, the dogs want to go for a walk, but the cats stay by the warm fire. The rain is now just a drizzle, and the girl proudly walks the dogs around the neighborhood.
Oh no! The dogs see the mailman and run after him. The girl calls out, hoping they won’t go too far. She feels sad when they disappear.
Back home, the girl waits for her parents. She tells them about the storm and how the dogs ran away. Her parents say dogs are loyal and will come back. Just then, she hears a bark and sees her pups returning!
The girl is so happy to see her furry friends again. She hugs them and asks them to stay forever. Now, her home is filled with happy cats and dogs. Let’s hope for no more storms!
Thank you for joining our story time! We hope you loved the adventure. See you next time for more fun stories!
Animal Observation Walk: Go on a short walk around your neighborhood or a nearby park with an adult. Look for different animals you might see, like dogs, cats, birds, or squirrels. Count how many you can find and talk about what they are doing. Are they playing, eating, or resting? Draw a picture of your favorite animal from the walk and share it with your class.
Pet Care Role Play: Pretend you have a pet like the girl in the story. Use stuffed animals or toys to act out taking care of your pet. What would you feed them? How would you keep them clean and happy? Practice giving them a name and telling a short story about an adventure you might have together.
Weather Watch: With the help of an adult, check the weather forecast for the week. Make a simple chart with drawings of sunny, rainy, or cloudy days. Each day, observe the weather and add a drawing to your chart. Discuss how different weather might affect animals and what they do, just like in the story when the rain brought the furry friends.

“It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” by M. Drew and Margarita Gro.
My grandpa says that in his town, it’s raining cats and dogs. He says the storm is on its way. It starts with rolling fog; the sky grows dark, and the fog moves in. It seems the storm is near. If cats and dogs will make you sneeze, beware and please stay clear!
I see some tails peek through the clouds. This furry rain is fun! I hurry out to greet them all and hug them one by one. I bring them in and dry them off; they’re scruffy, spry, and sweet. I give each one a special name: meet Lady, Max, and Pete!
My frisky friends all start to whine; their bellies bark for food. I fire up our backyard grill. I’ll serve lunch! Barbecued and with tummies full, we settle in, all cuddled on the floor. With doggy breath and kitty purrs, soft nuzzles I adore. Their big wet kisses wake me up!
My friends bounce up and down. I think it’s time to take a walk and show them all around. The dogs all race to get outside; the cats decide to stay. They’re comfy by the fire’s blaze; they’ll play inside today.
The rain is falling softly down; it’s just a drizzle now. No longer cats and dogs, the clouds don’t bark or meow. I grin and walk with beaming pride, parading down the block. The neighbors look as we pass by; they smile, wave, and talk.
Just then, a mailman on his way comes whistling down the street. The dogs run off on their four legs; the mailman on two feet. They chase the mailman out of sight! I cry out, “Please don’t go!” They’ll stamp him with their muddy paws and lick him head to toe.
My friends ran off and can’t be found. I’ve never felt so sad. I sit at home with tearful eyes and wait for Mom and Dad. When Mom and Dad walk in the door, they ask if I’m okay. I tell them all about the storm that poured down pets today. I sob in tears; the dogs ran off, I’ve searched the city through.
They tell me dogs are loyal friends; they’ll find their way to you. Just then, we hear a bark so clear; a nose pops around the bend. My pups came back! The words are true: dogs are a girl’s best friend. They wag their tails; I squeal with glee and spread my arms out wide. I ask them, “Won’t you stay with me and never leave my side?”
Now each and every happy room is filled with cats and dogs. We better hope for no more storms and no more rolling fogs. Thank you so much for being a part of my reading family! I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
