In this lesson, children engage in counting with the theme of pandas, starting with counting the adorable animals as they climb a tree and then as they settle down for a nap. The lesson combines fun counting exercises with interesting facts about pandas, encouraging kids to practice their counting skills while learning about these lovable creatures.
  1. How many pandas did we count in the tree?
  2. Can you show me how to count on your fingers like we did with the pandas?
  3. What do you think the pandas like to do when they are not sleeping?

Counting with Pandas

Let’s have some fun counting pandas together! Pandas are cute and fluffy animals that love to climb trees and take naps. Are you ready to count with them?

Counting Pandas in a Tree

First, let’s count the pandas as they climb up the tree:

One, two, three little pandas,

Four, five, six little pandas,

Seven, eight, nine little pandas,

Ten pandas in a tree!

Wow! Look at all those pandas having fun in the tree. Can you count them on your fingers?

Time for a Panda Nap

Now, it’s time for the pandas to rest. Let’s count them as they go to sleep:

One, two, three little pandas,

Four, five, six little pandas,

Seven, eight, nine little pandas,

Ten pandas go to sleep!

Shh! The pandas are sleeping now. Can you pretend to be a sleeping panda too?

Fun Panda Facts

Did you know that pandas love to eat bamboo? They munch on it all day long! Pandas are also very good at climbing trees, just like in our counting song. Next time you see a picture of a panda, remember how we counted them together!

Keep practicing your counting, and soon you’ll be able to count all sorts of things, just like the pandas!

  • How many pandas can you count in your favorite storybook or toy collection? Can you share what makes pandas special to you?
  • Have you ever climbed a tree or seen an animal in a tree? What was it like, and how do you think the pandas feel when they climb trees?
  • What is your favorite thing to do before going to sleep, just like the pandas take a nap? Can you think of other animals that like to take naps?
  1. Panda Finger Puppets: Create your own panda finger puppets using paper and markers. Draw and cut out small panda shapes, and then attach them to your fingers using tape or glue. Use your finger puppets to act out the counting song from the article. As you count each panda, move the corresponding finger puppet up the “tree” (your arm). This will help you practice counting and make it more fun!

  2. Panda Picnic: Pretend you are having a picnic with your panda friends. Gather ten small items, like toy pandas or blocks, and place them in a circle. Count each item as you place it down, just like the pandas climbing the tree. After counting, pretend the pandas are eating bamboo at the picnic. You can even use real snacks like celery sticks to represent bamboo!

  3. Panda Observation Walk: Go on a walk with a grown-up and see if you can spot things in nature that pandas might like, such as trees or plants. Count how many trees you see and imagine pandas climbing them. Discuss with your grown-up why pandas might like these things. This will help you connect counting with real-world observations.
