In the lesson “Let’s Read Together: Sam’s First Word,” children are introduced to Baby Sam, who is learning to talk and has a family eager to guess her first word. Despite their excitement and guesses, Sam surprises everyone by saying “Poop” loudly, capturing their attention and prompting laughter. The lesson encourages engagement by inviting children to share their own first words and fostering a sense of community among young readers.
  1. What was Sam’s first word?
  2. How did Sam’s family feel when she tried to say her first word?
  3. What do you think your first word was?

Let’s Read Together: Sam’s First Word

Hello, my reading friends! I’m Ani, and I’m super excited to read a story with you today. If you love reading stories, make sure to join me for more fun. Are you ready for a story?

Meet Baby Sam

Today, we’re going to meet a little baby named Sam. Sam is just starting to learn how to talk. Let’s find out what her first word will be as we read “Sam’s First Word” by B. Birdsong and illustrated by Holly Hatham.

Sam’s Family

Sam is a new baby who can do lots of things. She can wave her arms, clap her hands, and even take off her diaper! Her family gets very excited when she does something new. They smile, laugh, and cheer, “You can do it, go Sam!” They wonder what her first word will be.

Guessing Sam’s First Word

Everyone in Sam’s family has a guess:

  • “I hope it will be ‘Mama,’” says Mama.
  • “I hope it will be ‘Papa,’” says Papa.
  • “I hope it will be ‘Nana,’” says Nana.
  • “I hope it will be ‘Mr. Theotopoulos,’” says Mr. Theotopoulos, their neighbor.

Sam’s Surprise

Sam tries to say her first word, “Poop,” but no one listens. They are too busy thinking about their own guesses.

Mama sings a song with lots of “Mama” words. Sam says “Poop” again, but Mama doesn’t hear her.

Papa tells a story with lots of “Papa” words. Sam claps her hands and says “Poop,” but Papa doesn’t notice.

Nana paints “Nana” on the wall many times. Sam points to her diaper and says “Poop,” but Nana doesn’t see.

Mr. Theotopoulos recites a poem with “Mr. Theotopoulos” in it. Sam doesn’t listen because she has a plan.

Sam’s Big Announcement

Finally, Sam says “Poop” loudly, and everyone stops to listen.

“Poop,” says Mama.

“Poop,” says Papa.

“Poop,” says Nana.

Mr. Theotopoulos finishes his poem and agrees, “Poop.”

Sam smiles, laughs, and wonders what her next word will be.

Hello, my good friends! I’m so happy we get to read together, no matter where we are in the world. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!

  1. What do you think it would feel like to hear a baby say their first word? Have you ever heard a baby say their first word? What was it?
  2. If you could choose your first word, what would it be and why? Do you think it would make your family laugh or smile?
  3. Sam’s family was very excited about her first word. Can you think of a time when your family was really excited about something you did? What happened?
  1. Word Hunt: Let’s go on a word hunt! With a grown-up, walk around your home or classroom and find objects. Try to guess what their names are and say them out loud. Can you find something that starts with the same sound as “Sam”? How about “Poop”? This will help you practice saying new words just like Sam did!

  2. Family First Words: Ask your family members what their first words were. You can make a little book by drawing a picture of each family member and writing their first word underneath. Share your book with your friends and see if they can guess what your first word was!

  3. Sound and Action Game: Just like Sam clapped her hands and waved her arms, let’s play a game with sounds and actions. When you hear a word that starts with “P,” like “Papa” or “Poop,” clap your hands. When you hear a word that starts with “M,” like “Mama,” wave your arms. This will help you listen carefully and have fun with words!

**Sam’s First Word**
By B. Birdsong
Illustrated by Holly Hatham

There was once a new baby. Her name was Sam. Sam could do many things. She could wave her arms, clap her hands, and take off her diaper. The big people in Sam’s family were always excited when she did something new. They smiled, they laughed, and they cheered, “You can do it, go Sam!” They wondered what she’d do next. Perhaps she would say her first word, they said.

“I hope it will be ‘Mama,’” said Mama.
“I hope it will be ‘Papa,’” said Papa.
“I hope it will be ‘Nana,’” said Nana.
“I hope it will be ‘Mr. Theotopoulos,’” said Mr. Theotopoulos, their next-door neighbor.

“Poop,” said Sam, but no one paid any attention. They were busy thinking about how to get what they wanted.

“I will sing a song for Sam,” said Mama. Mama’s song had 63 words, all of them were “Mama.”
“Poop,” said Sam. She waved her arms to get Mama’s attention, but Mama was too busy singing.

“I will tell Sam a story,” said Papa. Papa’s story had 203 words, all of them were “Papa.”
“Poop,” said Sam. She clapped her hands to get Papa’s attention, but Papa was too busy telling his story.

“I will paint a picture for Sam,” said Nana. She painted “Nana” 86 times on the living room wall.
“Poop,” said Sam. She pointed to her diaper, but Nana didn’t pay any attention because she had just remembered that Sam couldn’t read.

“I will recite a poem for Sam,” said Mr. Theotopoulos. His poem had 44 words, 22 of them were “Mr. Theotopoulos.”
But Sam didn’t pay any attention; she was busy thinking about how to get what she wanted. She had tried waving her arms and clapping her hands. There was only one thing left to do.

Sam announced, and everyone stopped what they were doing.
“Poop,” said Mama.
“Poop,” said Papa.
“Poop,” said Nana.
Mr. Theotopoulos lowered his voice and reached the end of his poem.
“Poop,” he agreed.

Sam smiled, she laughed, she cheered, and she wondered what she’d say next.
