In this imaginative lesson, Anie invites readers to explore the whimsical world of “Squirrels in Antarctica,” where they can engage in a playful game of envisioning animals in silly and unexpected scenarios. Through a series of humorous examples, such as a hippo washing dishes or a turtle tap dancing on Saturn’s rings, the lesson encourages creativity and fun, prompting participants to come up with their own amusing animal adventures. Ultimately, the goal is to inspire imaginative thinking and enjoyment in storytelling.
  1. What silly animal can you think of that could go to a funny place?
  2. Can you imagine a funny thing that your animal would do there?
  3. How does it make you feel to think of these silly ideas?

???? Let’s Imagine: Squirrels in Antarctica!

Hello, reading friends! I’m Anie, and I’m so happy we get to read together today. Do you like playing games? I sure do! In this story, we use our imagination to play a fun game called “Squirrels in Antarctica.” If you have the book, grab it so we can read together!

Welcome to the Story!

The book is called “Squirrels in Antarctica,” written by Siri Carus and illustrated by Todd Wilkerson. It’s all about imagining silly things that don’t usually happen. Like, have you ever seen a squirrel in Antarctica? Probably not! But it’s fun to think about.

Funny Animal Adventures

Imagine a hippo helping you wash dishes in the kitchen. Or a narwhal taking a nap in New York City. How about a piglet having a fancy dinner with a tiny fork? These things are silly, but that’s what makes them fun!

Picture a porcupine in Paris wearing pink clothes or a skunk in an elevator trying not to smell bad. What if a sloth tried to run a marathon? It would take forever!

More Silly Ideas

Think about a pufferfish flying a plane or a blobfish teaching English in Spain. A seal skiing in Switzerland would be funny to see, and so would two spiders sipping lemon tea. Cheers!

Imagine a woodchuck on a rooftop throwing wood or a meerkat making movies in Hollywood. What about tigers twirling in tutus or a chicken crossing a busy road? Why did the chicken cross the road? Who knows!

Let’s Get Creative!

Let’s think of more silly things! A parrot eating pizza in Peru or a reindeer riding rainbows with friends. How about a gopher playing golf in snowy Greenland or a hamster dancing in a hip-hop club? Go, hamster, go!

Picture a turtle tap dancing on Saturn’s rings or a starfish in space collecting things. Maybe a bird scuba diving or a beaver winning a science fair prize. So many silly ideas!

Small Creatures, Big Fun

Don’t forget the tiny creatures! Imagine ladybugs sunbathing in Cabo or an ant riding a bicycle with no hands. Look, Ma, no hands!

What about a goldfish munching on pretzels in Berlin or tiny zooplankton playing a violin? So many fun ideas to think about!

Your Turn to Imagine!

Now it’s your turn to play this silly game. Pick an animal, think of a wacky place, and make up your own funny story. Let your imagination fly like snails on shooting stars!

Remember, there’s no right or wrong. The goal is to have fun and be creative. Can you think of a fancy giraffe and where it might be? Use your imagination!

I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time for more fun adventures!

  • What is the silliest animal adventure you can imagine? Can you think of an animal doing something funny in a place where it wouldn’t normally be?
  • Have you ever seen an animal do something surprising or funny in real life? What was it, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be and where would you go? What fun or silly things would you do?
  1. Animal Adventure Drawings: Grab some paper and crayons or markers. Think of your favorite animal and imagine it doing something silly in a place it wouldn’t normally be. Draw a picture of your animal on its adventure. For example, a penguin playing basketball in the desert! Share your drawing with a friend or family member and tell them the story behind it.

  2. Imagination Story Time: With a partner or in a small group, take turns picking an animal and a place from the story or come up with your own. Then, create a short story about what the animal is doing there. For example, “Once upon a time, a kangaroo was baking cookies on the moon…” Share your stories with the class and see who can come up with the silliest adventure!

  3. Observation Walk: Go on a walk around your neighborhood or school and look for animals or signs of animals. Imagine what silly things these animals might be doing if they were in a different place. For example, if you see a bird, imagine it wearing a tiny hat and singing opera in Italy. Share your observations and imaginative ideas with your classmates when you return.

Hello, reading friends! It’s Anie. I’m so glad we get to read together. Do you like to play games as much as I do? In this book, we get to learn how to play a fun game using our imagination. It’s called “Squirrels in Antarctica.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me!

**Annie’s House**

“Squirrels in Antarctica,” written by Siri Carus, illustrated by Todd Wilkerson.

Squirrels in Antarctica are rather rare, we think so. Finding hippos helping at your kitchen sink? Never have I seen a narwhal napping in New York or a piglet at a four-course meal with just a tiny spork. The best would be a porcupine in Paris wearing pink, or a skunk inside an elevator trying not to stink. Oh dear, I’m on the brink! These combos are unlikely, but the thought of them is fun, like a sloth who runs a marathon but isn’t ever done.

Picture now a pufferfish who’s piloting a plane, or a blobfish teaching English in the southern part of Spain. The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plane! A skiing seal in Switzerland would be a sight to see, and so would two tarantulas just drinking lemon tea. Cheers to you and me!

What about a woodchuck on a rooftop chucking wood? Or a meerkat making movies in the heart of Hollywood? Cut! That take was good! Now think of twirling tigers wearing tutus in a net, or a chicken crossing traffic who is riddled with regret. Why did I cross the road? I am really starting to sweat!

Let’s feed our clever minds and play a little more with animals across the world. There’s so much to explore, like a parrot eating polygon-shaped pizza in Peru, or a reindeer riding rainbows with his closest reindeer crew. How about a gopher golfing on a snowy Greenland green? That’s weird! Or a hamster in a hip-hop club with moves you’ve never seen. Go, hamster, go!

How about a turtle tap dancing on one of Saturn’s rings, or a starfish in space who is hoarding lots of things? What might be more absurd is a scuba diving bird, or a beaver at the science fair whose project came in third.

Let’s not forget to think of all the smallest creatures too— all the insects and their buddies that you won’t find at this zoo. Like two ladybugs in Cabo who are working on their tans, or an ant on a bicycle who’s riding with no hands. Look, Ma, no hands!

Imagine now a goldfish eating pretzels in Berlin—yum, yum! Or the tiniest zooplankton playing a tiny violin. I’m going to need a bigger chin!

It’s your turn now to have some fun and play this silly game. Pick an animal, a wacky place, and make no two the same! Your brain may take some twists and turns, like rodents racing cars.

[Applause]

So let your thoughts fly limitless, like snails on shooting stars. Yeah, there is no losing! You see, the goal is creativity. So if you’re stumped, we’ll get you halfway. Where might you find a fancy giraffe? Okay, reading friends, can you think of a place and maybe an object that hasn’t been used yet?

I hope you enjoyed our book today. See you next time!
