Hello, Reading Friends!

Hi there! I’m Ani, and I’m so glad you’re here to read with me today. Do you like stories? I have a fun one for us! Let’s get ready to meet a monster and a little girl who wants to be his friend. The story is called “The Monster Who Came to Visit.” If you have the book, you can read along with me!

Meeting the Monster

Once upon a time, a little girl invited a monster to her house. She thought if they became friends, he wouldn’t scare her anymore. What do you think happened next?

The Monster’s Visit

The monster was very hungry! He ate a lot of pancakes and drank lots of juice. He didn’t use a glass, though, which was a bit messy! He also broke some crayons and used up all the paint to draw on the walls. Oh no! What would your mom say if that happened?

Fun with Pets

The monster tried to give the girl’s cat a bath, but the cat didn’t like it and ran away. Then, he gave the dog a shower instead. What a silly monster!

Bedtime Adventures

When it was time for bed, the girl read stories to the monster. But instead of sleeping, he took her pillow and counted sheep very loudly. Finally, he wanted the girl to stay with him until he fell asleep. She held his hand, and soon he was snoring peacefully.

A New Friendship

As the girl watched the monster sleep, she realized something special. The monster wasn’t scary at all! He was just like her, and they could be great friends.

Goodbye for Now!

I hope you enjoyed the story! Remember, sometimes things that seem scary can turn out to be fun. Thanks for reading with me today. See you next time for another adventure!

  • What would you do if a monster came to visit your house? How would you make him feel welcome?
  • Have you ever been scared of something that turned out to be fun or friendly? Can you share your story with us?
  • If you could invite any character from a book to your house, who would it be and what activities would you do together?
  1. Monster’s Messy Meal: At home, try having a “Monster Meal” with your family. Pretend to be the monster from the story and have a fun, messy meal together. Use your imagination to eat like the monster, but remember to clean up afterward! Talk about why it’s important to use a glass and eat neatly. How does it feel to clean up after a messy meal?

  2. Monster Art Adventure: Create your own monster art! Use crayons, markers, or paint to draw a picture of the monster from the story. What colors will you use? Will your monster be silly or friendly? Share your artwork with your family and explain why you chose those colors and shapes. How does your monster compare to the one in the story?

  3. Friendship Role Play: With a friend or family member, act out a scene where you meet a monster for the first time. How would you introduce yourself? What would you say to make the monster feel welcome? Practice using kind words and actions to show how you can be a good friend, just like the girl in the story. How does it feel to make a new friend, even if they seem different at first?

“The Monster Who Came to Visit” by Nissa Bally, illustrated by Newsham Bhindi.

I asked a monster to my home. My master plan, you see, was because I thought if we were friends, then he’d stop scaring me. He ate a hundred pancakes and drank two jugs of juice. Asking him to use a glass was really of no use. He busted all my crayons and used up all my paint. His drawings on the walls would make my mother faint.

He tried to give my cat a bath; he chased her for an hour. And when he finally gave up, he gave my dog a shower. I tried to read him storybooks to help him go to sleep. Instead, he took my pillow and loudly counted sheep.

About to leave the bedroom, he insisted that I stay, so I held his hand until he snored and drifted right away. As I sat and watched the monster, it was very plain to see that the more and more I thought of it, he was really just like me. The little girl realized the monster was a lot like her; he wasn’t scary at all.

Alright, let’s do some shout-outs today! I’m sending them out to Clayton in La Canada, California; Anna and Alex in Ottawa, Canada; Ava Mariana in Kansas City; Sadie and Cash in Vickers, Kentucky; as well as Elizabeth and Lily in Copper’s Cove, Texas.
