In today’s story time, we explored the delightful tale “Dog in Charge” by K. Yall Going, where a dog is left in charge of the house while his family goes to the store. Despite his best efforts, chaos ensues when the mischievous cats go missing, leading to a messy situation. Ultimately, with the help of the cats, everything is cleaned up, and the dog learns that teamwork can make even the toughest tasks “easy breezy.”
  1. What did Dog think about being in charge?
  2. How did the cats help Dog when things got messy?
  3. What made Dog feel happy at the end of the story?

Welcome to Story Time!

Hello, friends! I’m Craig Toby, and today we’re going to have a fun story time together. Are you ready? Let’s begin with a wonderful book called “Dog in Charge” by K. Yall Going, with pictures by Dan Sentat.

Dog’s Busy Day

Dog had a very busy afternoon. He sat, stayed, and even danced on his back paws in a circle. After all that, Dog got a yummy treat! “Oh boy,” thought Dog, “I’m a good dog, a smart dog, the very best dog!”

Dog in Charge

The family said, “We’re going to the store, so you will be in charge, Dog. Watch the cats and make sure they don’t get into any trouble. You’re a dog; they’re cats. What could go wrong?”

“Exactly! You’re the biggest animal in the house. This should be easy breezy,” they said.

“Carrots and peasy,” Dog replied, trying to rhyme.

“That’s funny, but the saying is ‘easy breezy, lemon squeezy,’” they corrected him.

Where Did the Cats Go?

The family left, and Dog watched them go. “I will sit and then I will stay,” thought Dog. But the cats did not sit. Where did all the cats go? There were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 empty spots!

Dog looked in the kitchen. Splash went the milk! Dog chased the cat into the living room. No cat, or was there? Bark! Dog looked in the bedroom. No cat, or was there? Bark!

Oh No, a Mess!

“There’s a huge mess! Will Dog get blamed for this? This is not simple!”

Dog thought, “This is bad. This is so, so bad. I was going to be in charge, and now everything is a mess!”

Dog looked in the bathroom. No cat there either. Where were all the cats? Dog thought, “This has gotten out of hand.”

Dog’s Idea

Dog was hungry and tired. He laid down to think. Then Dog had an idea! Treats for good cats! Dog’s tummy rumbled, and his nose twitched. Dog ate one, two, three, four, five cat treats. Soon, the bag was empty.

Poor Dog! The family would not let him be in charge again. Dog had to fix everything. He tried to think, but his eyes grew heavy.

The Cats Help Out

“There’s no time to sleep! The house is a mess, and you’ve eaten all these treats!”

Just then, five little noses appeared. The cats loved Dog! They licked up the crumbs and milk, polished the living room, cleaned the bedroom, and straightened the bathroom. Then, the five cats snuggled up next to Dog.

Everything is Okay

“Wow! With five cats helping out, that was so simple! It was easy breezy!”

Dog got lots of scrumptious dog treats. “Where are the cats?” asked the family.

“Good while you were in charge,” Dog barked. He stood on his back legs and danced in a circle.

“Good cats,” thought Dog. “Smart cats, the very best cats!”

And just like that, everything was okay. The cats were snuggled up, Dog got his treats, and everyone was happy. In the end, it was just easy breezy!

  • What do you think it means to be “in charge” of something? Have you ever been in charge of a task or responsibility at home or school? How did it make you feel?
  • Dog had a problem when the cats made a mess. Can you think of a time when you had to solve a problem? What did you do to fix it?
  • In the story, the cats helped clean up the mess. Can you think of a time when you helped someone or when someone helped you? How did it make you feel?
  1. Role Play: Be the Dog in Charge!

Gather some stuffed animals or toys to represent the cats and place them around the room. Pretend you are the Dog in Charge! Can you keep an eye on the “cats” and make sure they don’t get into any trouble? Try to think of ways to keep them entertained and safe. Afterward, share with the group what you did to be a good “Dog in Charge.”

  2. Cat and Dog Treat Hunt

Hide some small treats or toys around the room, just like the cat treats in the story. Pretend you are the Dog and try to find all the hidden treats. Count how many you find and see if you can find them all. After the hunt, discuss how it felt to search for the treats and how Dog might have felt when he found the treats in the story.

  3. Draw Your Own Story Ending

Imagine what might happen next in the story. Draw a picture of what you think Dog and the cats will do after the family comes home. Will they have another adventure? Will Dog be in charge again? Share your drawing with the class and explain your story ending.
