???? Who Has a Pet Hedgehog?

Hello, my reading friends! I’m Annie, and I’m so happy you’re here to read with me. Do you like stories? I have a fun one for you today! Do you have a pet? Let’s find out about a girl who has a very special pet in the book “Who Has a Pet Hedgehog?”

Meet Victoria and Odin

Victoria has a pet hedgehog named Odin. Isn’t that a fun name? Odin is an African pygmy hedgehog. He has sparkly eyes, soft ears, and a pointy nose. His body is covered with prickly quills, and he has tiny paws and a fluffy belly. Odin was born in a place called Cape Cod, Massachusetts. His mommy is Nixie, and his daddy is Hatter. He has three brothers and sisters: Omar, Orla, and Odie. Victoria got Odin when he was just a baby, only eight weeks old!

Odin’s Cozy Home

Odin lives in a big, warm home made of bamboo. He has a special lamp that keeps him nice and toasty at 80 degrees. Odin loves to run on his 12-inch wheel for exercise. Did you know Odin is nocturnal? That means he sleeps during the day and plays at night! Every evening, he wakes up and eats his breakfast of kitty kibbles.

Yummy Treats and Playtime

Victoria drinks her milk, and Odin drinks water with his long, skinny tongue. Victoria gives Odin his favorite treats. He loves worms! Superworms are crunchy, wax worms are chewy, and butter worms are juicy. Victoria makes sure the worms stay in the bowl for Odin to enjoy.

After snack time, it’s playtime! Odin explores, sniffing and chirping. When he’s scared, he curls up into a ball. Victoria always watches him to keep him safe. They snuggle and watch cartoons together, and Odin makes happy sounds like chirps and purrs.

Taking Care of Odin

Once a week, Victoria’s mommy cleans Odin’s home and decorates it for special days. Victoria’s daddy checks the heat lamp to make sure Odin stays warm. If it gets too cold, Odin might hibernate, but that’s not good for African pygmy hedgehogs.

Odin takes baths to keep his paws clean, and Mommy clips his nails so they don’t hurt when he runs. At bedtime, Victoria says, “Good night, Odin. I love you.”

  • What do you think it would be like to have a pet hedgehog like Odin? How would you take care of it?
  • Odin is nocturnal, which means he sleeps during the day and is awake at night. Can you think of any other animals that are nocturnal? How do you think their lives are different from animals that are awake during the day?
  • Victoria gives Odin special treats like worms. What are some of your favorite treats, and why do you like them? Do you think Odin would like them too?
  1. Hedgehog Habitat Exploration: Create a cozy habitat for a toy hedgehog using materials like a shoebox, cotton balls, and colored paper. Think about what Odin might need in his home, like a warm lamp or a wheel for exercise. Discuss with your friends or family why each item is important for Odin’s comfort and health.

  2. Nighttime Adventure: Since Odin is nocturnal, try observing what happens in your home at night. With a grown-up, take a quiet walk around your house or yard after dark. What do you see or hear? Are there any animals or sounds that you notice? Share your observations and think about how Odin might feel during his nighttime adventures.

  3. Favorite Treats Taste Test: Odin loves different types of worms. Have a fun taste test with safe, kid-friendly snacks that have different textures, like crunchy crackers, chewy gummies, and juicy fruits. Talk about which ones you like best and why. How do you think Odin feels when he eats his favorite treats?

Hello, my reading friends! It’s Annie. I’m so happy you came to read with me. If you like reading stories with me, be sure to subscribe and make sure to watch all the way through because I’m going to do some shout-outs at the end. Are you ready for a story? Do you have a pet?

In today’s book, we’ll meet a girl who has a fairly unusual pet. Let’s find out what it is as we read “Who Has a Pet Hedgehog?”

Victoria has a pet hedgehog named Odin. He is an African pygmy hedgehog. He has sparkly eyes, velvety ears, and a pointy nose. He has prickly quills, stubby paws, and a fluffy belly. Odin was born in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. His mommy is Nixie, and his daddy is Hatter. He has three siblings: Omar, Orla, and Odie. Victoria adopted Odin when he was eight weeks old.

Odin lives in a big enclosure made of bamboo. A heat lamp set to 80 degrees keeps it toasty warm. There is a 12-inch wheel for exercise. Odin is a nocturnal mammal; he sleeps during the day and is active at night. Every evening, he emerges from his cozy igloo in style to enjoy his breakfast of kitty kibbles.

Victoria drinks her milk, and Odin drinks water using his long, skinny tongue. Victoria gives Odin his favorite treats and makes sure the worms stay in the bowl. Superworms have a hard exoskeleton and are crunchy. Wax worms have soft skin and are chewy. Butter worms are twice the size of wax worms and are juicy.

Victoria puts Odin into his litter box for potty time, and now their nightly playtime begins. Odin explores, sniffing and chirping, licking and anointing. When frightened, he hops and curls into a protective ball. Victoria follows him to keep him safe. They snuggle and watch cartoons, and Odin chirps and purrs.

Once a week, Mommy tidies the enclosure, and she and Victoria decorate it for special occasions. Daddy checks the heat lamp frequently during winter. If it becomes too cold, Odin will hibernate. Some animals hibernate for winter, but not African pygmy hedgehogs, as it can make them sick.

Odin takes baths to wash his paws, and Mommy clips his nails so that his paws do not hurt when he runs. It is now bedtime for Victoria. “Good night, Odin. I love you.”

Victoria loves having a pet hedgehog. Wasn’t it fun to learn all about hedgehogs? There were so many things I never knew before!
