Once upon a time, there was a boy named Sammy. Sammy had a big dream: he wanted to be a pirate captain just like his papa! But before he could become a captain, he had to learn a lot of pirate skills. Do you think Sammy can do it? Let’s find out in the story “Sammy the Seasick Pirate.”
Sammy made a list of all the things pirates do, and he was determined to learn them all. His papa helped him, kind of. First, Sammy learned that pirates need to swim. Luckily, Sammy was a great swimmer and made it safely to shore.
Next, Sammy discovered that pirates use swords. But Sammy found a bow and arrow instead and thought it was even cooler! He practiced shooting and got so good that he could hit apples from far away. After cleaning up his mess, Sammy learned that pirates also swab the deck.
Sammy’s next pirate lesson was to dig for gold. His papa hid two coins in the yard and promised ice cream if Sammy found them. Sammy dug lots of holes, and even though his mama fell into one, he quickly filled them back up. Pirates cover their tracks, after all!
Sammy drew a treasure map and hid some treasure in the house. His papa found it and reminded Sammy to clean up the crayon marks. Pirates work together with their crew, so Sammy and his papa scrubbed the floor together.
Finally, Sammy got to sail on a ship! He helped with the sails, read maps, and even steered the ship. But when the sea got rough, Sammy’s tummy felt funny, and he got seasick. His papa told him to look at the horizon, but Sammy still felt sick and threw up.
Later, Sammy sat under his favorite coconut trees, feeling sad. His papa told him he was proud of all the things Sammy learned. But Sammy worried he couldn’t be a pirate if he got seasick.
That night, Sammy heard a loud crash. In the morning, he found gold coins on the beach! A ship had wrecked on the reef, and Sammy had a brilliant idea. He could be a land pirate and hunt for treasure on land!
Sammy ran home with his pockets full of coins. “Papa! I’m going to be a land pirate!” he shouted. His papa was thrilled and called him a genius. Sammy started a new list for his land pirate adventures:
Sammy may have gotten seasick, but he found a way to be a pirate on land. He was ready for his new adventure. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
Create Your Own Treasure Map: Just like Sammy, you can create your own treasure map! Use a piece of paper and some crayons to draw a map of your backyard or a room in your house. Hide a small “treasure” (like a toy or a treat) and mark its location on your map. Then, swap maps with a friend or family member and see if they can find your hidden treasure. Remember to clean up any marks you make, just like Sammy did!
Pirate Skills Practice: Sammy learned many pirate skills. Choose one skill to practice at home. You could try balancing like you’re on a ship by walking along a line on the floor, or practice your aim by tossing a small ball into a basket from different distances. Think about how these skills might help you if you were a pirate!
Imagine Your Own Pirate Adventure: Sammy decided to become a land pirate. Imagine you are a pirate too! What kind of pirate would you be? Would you sail the seas or explore the land? Draw a picture or write a short story about your pirate adventures. Share your story with your class or family and see what adventures they would choose!

We are about to meet a boy named Sammy who wants to be a pirate captain just like his papa. But before he can reach his goal, there’s a lot to learn. Do you think he has what it takes? Let’s find out as we read “Sammy the Seasick Pirate.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me.
Today, I have my son and his family helping me read the book, which includes these two cuties, Blake and Callie.
“Sammy the Seasick Pirate,” written by Janelle Springer Wilms and illustrated by Damien Jones.
Sammy wanted nothing more in the world than to be a pirate captain when he grew up, just like his papa. So he made a list of all the things pirates do, and he would learn to do them too. Papa taught him how—well, kind of. Papa threw Sammy a peer and shouted, “Swim, lad, swim!”
Number one: Pirates can swim! Luckily, Sammy was born to swim and made it safely to shore.
Number two: Pirates use swords. Sammy found a bow and arrow with the swords in the shed. This is so much cooler than his sword! Papa taught him to aim and shoot. Sammy got so good that he shot apples off the kitchen table from ten paces away. Sammy yelled, “Mama, clean up this mess!” When he was done mopping, Sammy checked off number three: Pirates swab the deck.
Number four: Pirates dig for gold. There are two coins in the yard hidden under a tree. Papa told him, “When you find them, there’s ice cream for you and ice cream for me!” Sammy dug holes all over the yard—wide ones, thin ones, deep ones, and shallow ones. Sammy yelled, “Mama!” when she fell into one accidentally. He refilled the holes as fast as he could and ticked off number five: Pirates cover their tracks.
Number six: Pirates hide their treasures. Sammy gave Papa the map he drew. “There’s treasure in the house; X marks the spot!” Sammy shouted. Papa found it and said, “Quick, lad, get the brush and some water! You’ll be in trouble if your mama sees this!” They worked hard to scrub the crayon X off the floor, then Sammy ticked off number seven: Pirates work together with their crew.
Number eight: Pirates can sail! “Listen up, me hearties! Sammy be joining us today. Teach him all you know; he’ll be part of the crew someday,” announced Papa.
Sammy helped to hoist the sails, plugged the holes, read a map, and even helped steer the ship. Everything was going well until the sky grayed, the winds blew strongly, and the sea got choppy. Grumble went Sammy’s tummy. With a bump over the next wave, his tummy went swish, then slosh, and then Sammy threw up.
“Sammy, he be seasick! Climb up to the crow’s nest and look at the horizon,” said Papa. Sammy did as he was told. “It’s working!” he called down. But then the wind changed, and the ship rocked. Sammy’s tummy rumbled and tumbled, then it went swish, then slosh, and Sammy threw up all over the crew. They shrieked, “Turn the ship around!” commanded Papa.
Later that evening, Papa found Sammy sitting in darkness in his favorite grove of coconut trees. “Sammy, you tried your best,” he said, hanging some lanterns in the trees. “You can’t help being seasick. Look at all the things you learned. I’m proud of you, lad.”
Papa’s words didn’t cheer up Sammy. “I’ll never be a pirate if I can’t sail.” That night, a loud crash woke him up. He looked outside; everything was dark except for the coconut patch with the hanging lanterns. “I’ll check it out tomorrow,” thought Sammy.
At sunrise, Sammy ran down to the beach. There he saw something shining in the sand. It was a gold coin! A few steps away, he found another coin, then another. The beach was full of coins! He looked up and saw a wrecked ship stuck on the reef, and an idea hit him.
Sammy ran home with the coins jingling in his pockets. “Papa! I’ve been shouted Sammy! I’m gonna hunt for gold on land and loot shipwrecks!”
“Me boy’s a genius!” Papa said, throwing him in the air. “You’ll be a land pirate!”
That very same day, Sammy started a new list. The captain of the land pirates must have:
1. A crew of pirates that can’t go to sea
2. A lookout
3. A place to hide the gold
4. Shipwrecks to loot
“Hmm, now how can I wreck a ship?” he asked himself. “I’ve got an idea!” grinned Sammy.
Sammy may have gotten seasick, but he still figured out a way to reach his goal. He became a pirate on land. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
