Hello, my fabulous reading friends! It’s Ani here. Welcome to my house! I love hearing from you, so keep sending your cards, letters, pictures, and even books you’ve written. You can check out more fun stuff at anishouse.com.
Today, we’re going to read a story about Little Bear and his dad going fishing. But guess what? The fish aren’t biting! Do you think their day will be ruined? Let’s find out as we read “When I Caught You.” If you have the book, grab it and read along with me!
The book “When I Caught You” is written by Izzy B. We have some special guest readers today: my son Kyle and grandson Nilo.
As the moon was still shining above the trees, Dad Bear gently woke up Little Bear. “We have to get going early,” he whispered. “We need to beat the sun.” Little Bear stretched and yawned, looking like he had wrestled with a pine cone in his sleep. The two bears got ready and headed out for their adventure.
Dad Bear always took the long way around the mountain, through the valley, and into the tall birch trees. They stopped at the edge of a cliff to enjoy the view of the mountains.
Finally, they arrived at their fishing spot, but the fish didn’t want to bite. Their bobbers danced on the water, but not once did they jiggle. Little Bear was getting bored and started flicking pebbles into the water. As the sun began to set, Dad said, “This was an amazing day.”
Little Bear was confused. “Amazing day? We didn’t catch anything,” he said.
“It’s called fishing, not catching,” Dad Bear chuckled. “And we caught plenty.” Little Bear looked puzzled, so Dad explained.
“When we woke up, we caught the twinkle of the stars, and they showed us the way. We caught the majesty of the mountains as they reached up to the sky. We caught the touch of the wheat as it tickled our tummies. We caught the song of the cicadas as they sang for us. We caught the taste of the honeysuckle’s sweet nectar. We caught the smell of the wind as it filled our lungs with its wildness. We got so many things, my son, and it was a wonderful day because we enjoyed the wonders of the world.”
“You know what really made this day even better?” Dad asked.
“What is that?” Little Bear replied.
“We caught all these wonderful things together. But the best part of my day was catching the best thing in the whole world.” Little Bear listened closely. “Out of everything we got, my favorite of all was when I caught you.”
Even though Little Bear and his dad didn’t catch any fish, he learned the most important lesson of all: it’s the time you spend together that counts. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
Nature Walk Adventure: Go on a nature walk with a family member or friend. As you walk, try to “catch” different things with your senses, just like Little Bear and Dad Bear did. Can you catch the sound of birds singing, the smell of flowers, or the feel of the wind on your face? Draw a picture or write a few words about what you “caught” on your walk.
Memory Jar: Create a memory jar with your family. Every time you have a special moment together, write it down on a small piece of paper and put it in the jar. At the end of the month, open the jar and read all the wonderful memories you “caught” together. Discuss which memory was your favorite and why.
Story Time Reflection: Think about a time when you spent a day with someone special, even if you didn’t do anything extraordinary. What made that day special? Share your story with the class or write it down. What did you “catch” that made the day memorable?
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“When I Caught You” by Izzy B. In this book, we have some special guest readers: my son Kyle and grandson Nilo.
As the moon still hung above the treetops, Dad Bear gently woke his little fisherman. “Gotta get going early,” he whispered. “Gotta beat the sun.” Little Bear stretched and yawned; he looked like he wrestled a pine cone in his sleep. The two bears got ready for the day and headed out. Dad Bear always took the long way around the mountain, through the valley and into the tall birch trees. They stopped at the edge of the cliff to breathe in the mountains.
Finally, they arrived at their fishing spot, but the fish didn’t want to bite. As time ticked by, their bobbers danced upon the waters, but not once did they jiggle. Little Bear was getting bored; he barely held his pole as he flicked pebbles into the water. The sun began to make its descent when Dad said, “This was an amazing day.” Little Bear was confused. “Amazing day? We didn’t catch anything.”
“It’s called fishing, not catching,” Dad Bear chuckled. “And we caught plenty.” Once again, Little Bear looked confused, so Dad pulled him in.
“When we woke, we caught the twinkle of the stars, and they showed us the way. We caught the majesty of the mountains as they towered to the heavens. We caught the touch of the wheat as it tickled our tummies. We caught the song of the cicadas as they put on a concert. We caught the taste of the honeysuckle’s sweet nectar on our tongues. We caught the smell of the wind as the world blew by and filled our lungs with its wildness. We got so many things, my son, and it was a wonderful day simply because we got to enjoy the wonders of the world.”
“You know what really made this day even better?” Dad asked.
“What is that?” Little Bear replied.
“We caught all these wonderful things together. I didn’t get to tell you the best part of my day. I caught the best thing in the whole world.” Little Bear perked up to listen closely. “Out of everything we got, my favorite of all was when I caught you.”
Even though Little Bear and his dad didn’t catch any fish, he learned the most important lesson of all: it’s the time you spend together that counts. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
