Hi there! I’m Ani, and today we’re going to talk about a fun book called “The Mitten.” It’s one of my favorite winter stories. The book is a Ukrainian folktale, which means it’s a story from Ukraine, and it was adapted and illustrated by Jan Brett. Let’s find out what happens in this snowy adventure!
In the story, we meet a boy named Nikki. He really wants a pair of mittens that are as white as snow. His grandmother, Baba, wasn’t sure about making white mittens because she thought they might get lost in the snow. But Nikki really wanted them, so Baba made him a pair.
After Nikki got his new mittens, he went out to play in the snow. But guess what? He accidentally dropped one of his mittens! Oh no! The mitten goes on a snowy adventure all by itself. If you want to know what happens next, you can read “The Mitten” and find out!
Now, let’s say hello to some of our friends from all around the world! A big shout-out to Maddie and Ellie in Sacramento, California; Jace and Carly in New York City; Leliana in Oxford, Arkansas; Alex Wang in Shanghai, China; Oliver, Matthew, William, and Camilla in Ocala, Florida; Jade and Osiris-Huerta in Mission, Texas; Jovi, Macy, and Hardy in Mountain Green, Utah; Vinnie and Archer in Rapids, Minnesota; Paxton and Emmett in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Omar and Awab Majeed in Kigali, Rwanda; Zainab and Sarah in Bristol, UK; Brooklyn and Winchester, Tennessee; Hayley Johnson in Sylvania, Ohio; Vera in Stowe, Ohio; Tad and Ally in Southern Illinois; Tiaman in St. Louis, Missouri; Cash, Kingston, and Presley in Naples, Florida; Franco and Mateo in Plymouth, UK; Lila in Newfoundland, Canada; Ariana and Alexa in San Diego, California; Mateo Mendoza in Hobart, Indiana; Brodie in Onalaska, Washington; Vash in Springfield, Missouri; Ren in San Diego, California; Magdalena and Saudi Arabia; Dalton in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Eamon, Lucy, and Pokey in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa; Adelaide, Jane, and Amelia May in South Bend, Indiana; Adela and Harley in Corpus Christi, Texas; and JJ Painter in Newton, UK.
Hello to all of you, my good friends! I’m so happy we can read and learn together, no matter where we are in the world. I hope you enjoyed learning about “The Mitten.” See you next time for more fun stories!
Mitten Adventure Hunt: Just like Nikki’s mitten went on an adventure, let’s have a mitten hunt! Ask an adult to hide a mitten or a small glove somewhere in your house or yard. Then, go on a hunt to find it! Once you find it, think about what kind of adventure your mitten might have gone on if it were in a story. Share your mitten’s adventure with a friend or family member.
Animal Mitten Match: In “The Mitten,” different animals find their way into Nikki’s mitten. Draw or print pictures of animals like a bear, rabbit, or mouse. Then, find a mitten or glove at home and see how many of these animal pictures you can fit inside. Talk about why animals might want to snuggle inside a mitten. What do you think they would do to stay warm in the winter?
Color and Disguise Experiment: Nikki’s mitten was white, just like the snow. Try an experiment with colors! Take a white piece of paper and a colored piece of paper. Place them both outside on the grass or in the snow. Which one is easier to see? Why do you think Baba was worried about the white mitten getting lost? Discuss how colors can help things blend in or stand out in different environments.

Hello, my reading friends! It’s Ani. Today, I have a book review and some shout-outs for you. The book I’m going to review is one of my winter favorites. It’s called “The Mitten.” “The Mitten” is a Ukrainian folktale adapted and illustrated by Jan Brett, published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons, part of Penguin Young Readers Group.
In this book, we’ll meet Nikki, a young boy who wants his new mittens made from wool as white as snow. When he first asked his grandmother, Baba, she didn’t want to make white mittens. “If you drop one in the snow,” she warned, “you’ll never find it.” But Nikki really wanted the snow-white mittens, so his grandmother finally made him a pair. After she finished, she said, “Then you come home first. I will look to see if you are safe and sound, but then I will look to see if you still have your snow-white mittens.”
Nikki went off to play in the snow and, without realizing it, dropped one of his mittens. From that point, his lost mitten goes on a snowy adventure. Find out what happens when you pick up a copy of “The Mitten.”
