Hi there! I’m Ani, and I’m so happy we can read together. If you want to hear more stories, ask your parents to help you follow me online. Are you ready for a fun story?
Today, we’re going to read about a cute little lump who feels a bit sad. Let’s find out what makes him feel better in the book “The Universe is Rooting for You,” written by Dan Sadlowski and illustrated by Allison Pierce.
Once upon a time, a little lump sat on a stump feeling sad. Suddenly, the universe called out, “Hey!”
The little lump replied, “Um, yes?”
The universe had a special message: “Don’t be sad, little lump. Even when you feel down, the earth shakes and moves because it wants to cheer you up. When it rains, it’s not to make you sad, but to wash away your frown and make you smile again.”
The universe continued, “The bright sun wants to shine just like you do. The leaves show you it’s okay to fall sometimes. The trees teach you to be strong and stand tall. The flowers say you are more beautiful than you know. Let’s help each other grow!”
“The mountains shout, ‘Go, little lump, go!’ The wind wants to fly with you. The ocean waves come back to be with you. Even the moon tries to copy your smile sometimes. Planets, galaxies, and stars all want to be as amazing as you are. The universe is cheering for you, little lump, and now you know how much you are loved!”
The little lump thought, “Wow, it’s true! Everything in the universe is cheering for me. Now, I want to take care of the universe too. The universe is cheering for all of you, and so am I!”
Let’s say hello to some friends around the world:
Thank you for reading with me today, my dear friends! No matter where you are in the world, I’m so glad we can share stories together. See you next time!
Nature Walk Adventure: Take a walk outside with your family or friends. Look for things in nature that make you feel happy, just like the little lump in the story. Can you find a tree that stands tall, a flower that is beautiful, or a cloud that looks like it’s smiling? Draw a picture of your favorite thing you saw and share why it made you feel good.
Universe Cheer Cards: Create a card for someone special, telling them how the universe is cheering for them. Use colorful paper, crayons, or markers to draw stars, the sun, or the moon. Write a message inside about how amazing they are, just like the universe thinks the little lump is amazing. Give the card to your friend or family member to make them smile.
Feelings and Nature Match Game: Think about different feelings you have, like happy, sad, or excited. Match each feeling with something in nature. For example, when you’re happy, you might think of a bright sun. When you’re calm, you might think of a gentle breeze. Share your matches with a friend or family member and ask them what they would choose.

“The Universe is Rooting for You,” a story by Dan Zadlowski, illustrated by Alison Pierce.
Off on a stump sat a sad little lump.
“Hey,” the universe shouted.
“Um, yes?” said the little lump.
Then the universe had something to say:
“Don’t fret, my little lump. Even when you’re down in the dumps, the earth rumbles, bumbles, and bumps because it does not want to see you that way. When it rains, it’s not to bring you down, but to wash away your frown. It wishes to comfort you. The bright sun wants to shine like you do. The leaves show you it’s okay to fall. The trees teach you to be strong and stand tall. The flowers speak: you are more beautiful than you know. Let’s help each other grow. The mountains shout from the mountaintops: go, little lump, go! The wind yearns to soar with you. The ocean waves come crashing back to be with you. And every once in a while, the moon will try to copy your smile. Planets, galaxies, and stars all aim to be as amazing as you are. The universe is rooting for you, little lump, and now you know these are just a few of the things that love you so.”
“Wow, it’s true,” thought the little lump. “Everything in the universe is rooting for me and has my back. Now it’s my turn to take care of the entire universe and give back. The universe is rooting for all of you, and so am I!”
