In the lesson “It’s Christmas, David!”, a curious little boy named David navigates the excitement of Christmas while learning about patience and the importance of following rules, despite his mischievous tendencies. Ultimately, he discovers joy in the holiday spirit through a heartfelt letter from Santa, reminding him that being good matters more than the gifts he asked for. In “Pete the Cat Saves Christmas,” Pete steps up to help Santa deliver presents when he falls ill, demonstrating that even those who may seem small can achieve great things through determination and kindness.
  1. Why do you think David had to wait to see his presents?
  2. What did Pete the Cat do to help save Christmas?
  3. How can we show that we are trying to be good like David and Pete?

It’s Christmas, David!

Once upon a time, there was a little boy named David. It was Christmas time, and everyone was excited! But there were lots of rules to follow. People kept saying, “No peeking!” because they didn’t want David to see his presents too early.

David was so curious! He wanted to see what was inside the boxes. But he had to be careful not to fall and hurt himself. Everyone said, “Be patient, David!”

David also saw some shiny things that looked like toys, but they were decorations for the Christmas tree. He thought, “Maybe I can play with them just for a minute.” But everyone reminded him, “Santa’s watching!”

When it was time to write a Christmas list, David asked for some silly things, like a big car called a Ferrari. But Santa knew what was best for David.

Sometimes, David was a little naughty, like when he wanted to open his presents early or when he forgot to use the toilet. But in the end, Santa knew David was trying to be good.

On Christmas morning, David woke up and found a letter from Santa. It said, “Merry Christmas, David! Love, Santa Claus.” David was so happy! He didn’t get the Ferrari, but he got lots of other wonderful gifts.

Pete the Cat Saves Christmas

One day before Christmas, Santa wasn’t feeling well. He had a bad cold and was worried about delivering toys to all the good girls and boys. Would Christmas be canceled? No way! Santa had a plan.

Santa called his friend, Pete the Cat, to help. Pete was brave and said, “I’ll do it! Even though I’m small, at Christmas we give, so I’ll give it my all!”

Pete the Cat was ready to save Christmas! He didn’t have a sleigh like Santa, but he was determined to deliver all the presents. Everyone cheered for Pete, hoping he could do it.

Thanks to Pete’s hard work and big heart, Christmas was saved! All the children got their presents, and everyone was happy. Pete showed us that even if you’re small, you can do big things when you try your best!

  • What do you think David learned about being patient during Christmas time? Can you think of a time when you had to be patient for something exciting?
  • Why do you think Pete the Cat was able to save Christmas even though he was small? Can you share a time when you did something brave or helped someone, even if it seemed difficult?
  • If you could ask Santa for one special gift, what would it be and why? How do you think Santa decides which gifts are best for each person?
  1. Christmas Curiosity Hunt: Just like David was curious about his presents, let’s go on a curiosity hunt! Find three objects in your home that are wrapped or covered. Guess what’s inside or underneath without opening them. Share your guesses with a family member and see if you can find out what’s really there later. This activity helps you practice patience and curiosity, just like David!

  2. Decorate Your Own Tree: Create your own Christmas tree using paper and crayons. Draw or cut out decorations like stars, balls, and candy canes. Remember, some decorations are just for looking, not for playing, just like in David’s story. Talk about why it’s important to be careful with decorations at home.

  3. Pete’s Big Heart Challenge: Pete the Cat showed that even small helpers can do big things. Think of a way you can help someone in your family today. Maybe you can help set the table, clean up toys, or make a card for someone. Share how it feels to help, and remember, giving your best is what makes you special, just like Pete!

Here’s a sanitized version of the provided transcript:

It’s Christmas, David, by David Shannon.

At Christmas time, everyone always said, “No peeking!” Oh my gosh, you guys, David might fall and hurt himself off that stool! But it’ll be worth it; he’s going to see his present. Yeah, but he could injure himself.

Guys, it’s probably going to be a neck brace. No snitching! Those are not toys. David, those go on the tree. To be fair, those look like toys. Okay, we’ll just play with them for a minute.

Yeah, Santa’s watching.

What? It’s a… seriously, somebody get him a coat; he’s going to catch cold! What if he slips? That’s no protection.

Be patient! Hurry up, guys; there are some ridiculous requests on that Christmas list, like a Ferrari. Give me a break!

Oh, come on, Santa, please! Do you know what the insurance is on that?

Craig, David’s on the naughty list!

Hey guys, what? It’s… but seriously, you should not pee outside; pee in the toilet! It’s what it’s for! You’re ruining the fun. Santa is going to bring you a lump of coal.

Uh-oh, leg! Don’t start yet! Sit up straight, don’t reach, put your napkin in your lap, get your elbows off the table.

No, David, you may not open one early. Go to sleep, David. No Christmas for you!

Dear David, sorry you were naughty. Love, Santa Claus.

This is really sad. I mean, David is just trying to be good, but he’s a little boy; it’s normal.

Oh, now you don’t care about the elbows! Wake up, David; you were dreaming.

Yes, David, it’s Christmas! Yay!

Dear David, Merry Christmas! Love, Santa Claus.

Well, it all worked out well in the end. He was a little bit naughty, but he got everything on his Christmas list. Not the Ferrari, though.

You’re going to pout because you didn’t get a Ferrari? Sounds like a couple of naughty kids who deserve lumps of coal!

**Pete the Cat Saves Christmas** by James Dean, story by Eric Litwin.

It was the day before Christmas, and Santa was ill in the cold winter wind. He had caught a bad cold. Will Christmas be canceled? Will it come to that? Never! cried Santa. Let’s call Pete the Cat.

Santa asked Pete to deliver the toys to all the good girls and boys.

Wow, that was so close! We almost lost Christmas! Did I write my letter for nothing? Thank goodness for Pete the Cat jumping in on short notice!

Is it too short notice, though? I mean, Pete the Cat rides a surfboard, not a sleigh. Craig, is he up for delivering all those presents?

I’m pulling for you, Pete, but it’s not looking good.

Come on, save Christmas!

“I’ll do it,” said Pete. “And although I’m small, at Christmas we give, so I’ll give it my all!”

Give it your all, Pete! We’re counting on you, buddy!
