Meet Penelope the T-Rex

Penelope is a T-Rex who loves music! She enjoys singing and playing the guitar. There’s a talent show at her school, and Penelope wonders if she can be brave enough to join. Let’s find out in the story “We Will Rock Our Classmates.”

Penelope’s School Adventures

Penelope is the only T-Rex at her school. Sometimes, her classmates only see her as a dinosaur. They say things like, “You can be the dinosaur in our game!” But Penelope is more than just a dinosaur. She loves playing, reading, drawing, and most of all, making music!

The Talent Show Announcement

When Mrs. Noodleman tells the class about the school talent show, Penelope feels excited but also a bit nervous. She wants to rock her classmates with her music. The sign-up sheet is next to Walter the Ferocious Goldfish. Penelope takes a deep breath and bravely writes her name with her favorite purple marker.

Sharing the News

After school, Penelope tells her parents about signing up for the talent show. She hums her favorite songs while brushing her teeth and dances on her way to the bus. She even tells her classmates about her favorite band, The Weevils.

Rehearsal Time

At rehearsal, Penelope gets nervous. She can’t sing or play her guitar. She worries that maybe dinosaurs can’t rock and roll. Feeling sad, Penelope is very quiet on the way home and doesn’t eat much dinner.

Feeling Down

The next day, Penelope sits alone at recess. She doesn’t want to play any games. At the end of the day, she crosses her name off the sign-up sheet with a sad blue marker.

A Talk with Daddy Rex

When Penelope gets home, Daddy Rex talks to her. He shows her a family photo album. “Look, here’s your Uncle Frank, a figure skater, and your mom finishing a marathon. And here’s me, the world hamburger eating champion!” Daddy Rex tells Penelope, “Being a T-Rex is just part of who you are. You are kind, caring, creative, and adventurous. You can be anything you want to be.”

Finding Courage

The next day, Penelope goes back to the sign-up sheet. Her classmates ask, “Can we play in your band, Penelope?” This gives her the courage she needs.

The Talent Show Night

On the night of the show, Penelope is excited and nervous. She looks for her parents in the audience. When it’s her turn, the stage lights shine brightly. Penelope is a T-Rex, but she’s also kind, caring, creative, and adventurous. Most importantly, Penelope is a rock star!

The Big Performance

Penelope and her band, the Mustard Seeds, come in second place, just behind Mabel Hastings and her dancing pony. Penelope is happy because she loves ponies. She learns that with a little courage, she can be anything she wants to be.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed our story today. Remember, you can be anything you want to be, just like Penelope. See you next time!

  • Penelope was nervous about performing in the talent show. Can you think of a time when you felt nervous about trying something new? What helped you feel better?
  • Penelope’s classmates only saw her as a dinosaur at first. Have you ever felt like people only see one part of who you are? What are some things you like to do that make you unique?
  • Penelope’s dad reminded her of all the amazing things her family members have done. Who in your family or friends inspires you, and what have they done that you admire?
  1. Music Exploration: Just like Penelope loves music, let’s explore different musical instruments! Gather some simple instruments like a tambourine, maracas, or a small drum. If you don’t have instruments, you can make your own using household items like a rice-filled container for a shaker or a pot and spoon for a drum. Try playing along to your favorite song and see how the sounds change when you use different instruments. Discuss with your friends or family which instrument you like best and why.

  2. Bravery Badge: Penelope showed courage by signing up for the talent show. Think about a time when you were brave. It could be trying a new food, speaking in front of the class, or making a new friend. Draw a picture of yourself being brave and create a “Bravery Badge” to celebrate your courage. Share your story with the class or your family and talk about how it felt to be brave.

  3. Role Play Adventure: Penelope’s classmates initially saw her only as a dinosaur. Let’s play a game where you pretend to be someone or something else. You could be a superhero, a chef, or even a musician like Penelope! Dress up or use props to act out your role. Afterward, discuss how it felt to be seen as something different and what unique qualities you brought to your character.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Penelope the T-Rex loves music. She loves to sing and play the guitar. There’s a school talent show coming up. Do you think she’ll be brave enough to sign up? Let’s find out as we read “We Will Rock Our Classmates.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me.

**We Will Rock Our Classmates** by Ryan T. Higgins

Penelope was the only T-Rex in her school. Sometimes that made her stand out a little, and sometimes Penelope’s classmates didn’t see her at all; they just saw a dinosaur.

“Want to play cops and dinosaurs? You can be the dinosaur!”
“Wait, we’ll be the dentist, you’ll be the dinosaur!”
“Have you been flushing?”
“Well, yeah, my Moto’s backpack is stuck in your teeth, dinosaur!”

Not Penelope. She loved to play, she loved to read, and she loved to draw. But the one thing Penelope loved to do more than anything else was to make music. She loved to sing and play guitar. Penelope loved to rock and roll!

So when Mrs. Noodleman told the class about the school talent show, Penelope was excited but also nervous. She wanted to rock her classmates, but could she do it? The sign-up sheet was right next to Walter the Ferocious Goldfish. Penelope took a deep breath; she had to do it. She tiptoed past Walter and quickly wrote her name with her bravest purple marker.

After school, Penelope shared the big news with her parents. She hummed her favorite songs while brushing her teeth and danced all the way to the bus. She even told her classmates about her favorite band, The Weevils.

At last, it was time for the rehearsal. On stage, Penelope froze. She could not sing; she could not play guitar. She worried that dinosaurs could not rock and roll. Penelope was very quiet on the car ride home and hardly ate anything for supper.

The next day at recess, Penelope sat alone on the bench. She would not play hopscotch or duck-duck-goose. At the end of the day, Penelope crossed her name off the sign-up sheet with her saddest blue marker.

When Penelope got home, she went straight to her room. Daddy Rex came in to talk to her. “Is everything okay?” he asked. She cried, “I am just…” “I see,” said Daddy Rex. “Come with me; take a look at this family photo album. This is your Uncle Frank; he was a figure skater. Oh, and here’s your mom finishing her first marathon. And here’s me, the world hamburger eating champion. I ate 5,053 hamburgers with ketchup! You see,” said Daddy Rex, “being a T-Rex is only part of who you are. You, for instance, are kind, caring, creative, and adventurous, and you can be anything you want to be.”

The next day at school, Penelope marched back over to the sign-up sheet. She looked straight at Walter and almost lost her nerve, but Penelope’s classmates had a different idea. “Can we play with you in your band, please, Penelope?” And that gave her just enough courage.

On the night of the show, Penelope was really excited and also really nervous. She peeked out from backstage to try and find her parents. When the curtains opened, William Omoto and his amazing animal sounds took the stage, followed by Mabel Hastings and her dancing pony. Then there was the Stagman Brothers’ synchronized swimming mimes act, followed by Martina Cortez and her dazzling card tricks.

Finally, it was Penelope’s turn. The lights on the stage were bright, but not as bright as Penelope. Penelope was a T-Rex; she was also kind, caring, creative, and adventurous. Most of all, Penelope Rex was a rock star!

Penelope and the Mustard Seeds came in second place, just behind Mabel Hastings and her dancing pony. That was okay with Penelope; she loved ponies. Penelope discovered she could be anything she wanted to be. All it took was a little courage.

I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
