Thanks for Joining Story Time!

We hope you enjoyed these stories about David! Remember, everyone makes mistakes, but it’s important to learn and say sorry. See you next time for more fun stories!

  • David gets into lots of funny situations, like drawing on the walls or climbing for cookies. Can you think of a time when you did something a little bit silly or mischievous? What happened, and how did you feel afterward?
  • In the stories, David learns about rules at home and school. Why do you think rules are important? Can you share a rule you have at home or school and why it helps everyone?
  • David sometimes forgets to say sorry when he makes a mistake. Why do you think saying sorry is important? Can you remember a time when you said sorry to someone? How did it make you and the other person feel?
  1. Draw Your Own Story: Just like David loves to draw, let’s create our own story! Use paper and crayons to draw a picture of something fun you like to do. Remember to think about where it’s okay to draw and where it’s not, just like David learned. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and tell them about your story.

  2. Role-Playing Rules: Let’s play a game where we practice following rules like David does at school. Take turns being the teacher and the student. The “teacher” can say a rule, like “No running inside,” and the “student” can show how to follow it. Afterward, talk about why these rules are important and how they help keep everyone safe and happy.

  3. Apology Practice: Sometimes, like David, we make mistakes. Let’s practice saying sorry. Think of a time when you might have done something by accident, like spilling milk or forgetting to clean up toys. Practice saying, “I’m sorry,” and talk about how you can fix the mistake. Remember, saying sorry helps us feel better and shows we care about others.

“Cookies? Yeah, but he could fall!”
“Cookies can lead to injury! Cookies can lead to the hospital! Cookies can lead to a cast!”
“No, David! No, no, no!”
“Oh my gosh, that’s going to cause so much water damage!”
“Craig, he’s a sea captain on a very important mission! Look at everything that’s going on! There’s a mine following him, and a shark in his hand! What’s he going to do?”
“That duck is clearly in trouble, and his battleship is going to sink! It’s going to be a big insurance deductible!”
“His battleship’s going to sink, Craig! Come back here!”
“David, I know it’s a bud, but seriously, he needs to put some clothes on! It’s inappropriate!”
“Craig, it’s summertime! He’s going to the swimming hole!”
“David, be quiet! Don’t play with your food! Food is not a toy; it’s for sustenance!”
“I disagree, Craig! He just made a best friend from scratch!”
“That’s enough, David! Go to your room!”
[Music]
“Superhero, settle down! Stop that this instant! That’s so disgusting! I mean, use a tissue, right, Ryan?”
“Yeah, definitely use a tissue!”
“Put your toys away! Bulldozer, robot, dinosaur, keyboard, spaceship— not in the house, David!”
“Whoa, David! You’re going to hurt yourself or break something!”
“He’s wearing a mask!”
“Or break something— like what I said!”
“No, David!”
“Uh, or break something— I’m pretty sure that was already broken!”
“Craig, no it wasn’t!”
“David, come here!”
“Yes, David?”
“I love you!”
“That was really touching!”
“Okay, Craig, come here!”
“There it is! No, David!”

**David Goes to School**
David’s teacher always said, “No, David! No yelling! No pushing! No running in the halls!”
“David, you’re tardy! You really need to be on time to class!”
“But it’s not his fault!”
“Of course it is! It’s his parents’ fault!”
“How so?”
“They drove him to school!”
“What if he took the bus?”
“Bus driver’s fault!”
“Maybe he had a dentist appointment!”
“How do you figure?”
“What’s in his other hand?”
“We don’t know— probably a dental note! He does need some dental work!”
“Yeah, sit down, David! 11 – 4 is 7, 2 + 2 is 4, 4 + 4 is 8!”
“Don’t chew gum in class! It’ll end up stuck under the desk!”
“Yeah, but bubble gum is delicious!”
“Yeah, but you shouldn’t chew it in class!”
“Right, don’t chew it in class!”
“Are you nodding?”
“No, yes!”
“Did you just say yes?”
“No, yes!”
“David, raise your hand! Keep your hands to yourself!”
“Yeah, keep your hands to yourself, please!”
“Ah, but he hasn’t touched anyone yet!”
“Yeah, but he’s almost touching her!”
“Well, almost isn’t touching, am I right?”
“But you’re going to touch me!”
“But I’m almost touching you!”
“So, yeah, but you’re going to!”
“Nope! Pay attention!”
“Wait your turn, David! You should not cut in line; it’s very rude!”
“Maybe he’s not cutting; he just wants milk for lunch!”
“Nah, I don’t think so!”
“Okay, maybe he’s just looking at the—”
“Well, he can still wait!”
“Getting a little peek!”
“It’s not your turn!”
“I don’t care who started it!”
“Recess is over!”
“Let me guess, Craig— little kids shouldn’t get to go to the bathroom now?”
“Actually, I think if a little kid has to go to the bathroom, let him go!”
“Why?”
“‘Cause I peed my pants in the fourth grade, and it was the most embarrassing experience of my life!”
“Don’t laugh; it happens!”
“That’s it, mister! You’re saying after school!”
“David, have you finished your soup?”
“Good job, David! Yes, David, you can go home now!”
“Why is he getting a gold star? He was nothing but bad today! He was late, stayed at recess too long, chewed gum, yelled in the library, and cut in line!”
“Is the classroom super clean?”
“Yes, it is!”

“He keeps saying books!”

Today’s book is “David Gets in Trouble” by David Shannon. Let’s get started!

**David Gets in Trouble**
When David gets in trouble, he always says, “No, it’s not my fault! I didn’t mean to!”
“Of course you meant to! Okay, you chose to skateboard in the house!”
“Oh no! Sometimes you’re just walking along in the house, and then a skateboard jumps in front of you, and then you’re like, ‘Whoa! It was an accident!’”
“Do I have to?”
“Oh, I forgot!”
“You forgot? It’s a bad excuse! I forget stuff all the time! Sometimes I forget my lunch, sometimes I forget my jacket, and sometimes I forget my pants!”
“Books gets it!”
“And it’s Brooks!”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m saying! My dog ate my homework!”
“Look, he’s in the window!”
“I couldn’t help it!”
“I was hungry!”
“Guys, we’re in the middle of reading the book! Gotta keep the energy up!”
“Never a bad time for snack time!”
“Yeah, well at least they’re not treats!”
“Right?”
“Yeah, but she likes it!”
“It slipped!”
“But Dad says—”
“Excuse me, he burped!”
“Oh dude, Craig!”
“Books, did you hear that?”
“It’s Brooks!”
“Books is crazy!”
“No, it wasn’t me!”
“Oh, it wasn’t? There’s cake all over your face!”
“That could be anything! I mean, that could be mud, could be a marker!”
“Okay, what about the chunk of cake taken out?”
“Velociraptor? A dinosaur?”
“Yeah, pretty sure they’re real!”
“Yeah, yes, it was me! I’m sorry! I love you, Mom!”
“So if you make a mistake, even if you keep making it, all you got to do is say you’re sorry! Even if you say a friend’s name wrong over and over again!”
“Oh yeah, Craig, I’m sorry I called you Greg when we first met, and I’m sorry I called you Brian!”
“You know it hurts when people get your name wrong!”
“Sure does! Anyway, thanks for being on the show, Brooks! Good job, Brooks!”
“You’re welcome, Brooks Forester! Everyone, see you next time!”

**It’s Christmas, David!**
At Christmas time, everyone always said, “No, David! No peeking!”
“Oh my gosh, you guys! David might fall and hurt himself off that stool!”
“Oh, it’ll be worth it! Yeah, he’s going to see his present!”
“Yeah, but he could injure himself!”
“Yeah, but he’s going to get to see what he’s getting for Christmas before Christmas!”
“Guys, it’s probably going to be a neck brace!”
“No snitching! Those are not toys!”
“Yeah, David, those go on the tree!”
“To be fair, those look like toys!”
“They’re toys!”
“Okay, we’ll just play with them for a minute!”
“Yeah, Santa’s watching!”
“David, what? It’s a butt!”
“It’s a butt! Seriously, somebody get him a coat! He’s going to catch cold!”
“What if he slips? That’s no protection!”
“Be patient!”
“Hurry up, guys! There are some ridiculous requests on that Christmas list, like a Ferrari! Give me a break!”
“Ferrari? Oh, come on, Santa, please! Do you know what the insurance is on that?”
“Craig, David— naughty list! Naughty list!”
“Hey guys, what? It’s pee!”
“It’s pee! But seriously, you should not pee outside! Pee in the toilet! Okay, that’s what it’s for! You’re ruining the fun! Santa is going to bring you a lump of coal!”
[Music]
“Uh-oh! Don’t start yet! Sit up straight! No yawning at the dinner table! That’s the wrong fork! Sit up straight! Don’t reach! Put your napkin in your lap! Get your elbows off the table!”
“No, David! You may not open one early! Go to sleep, David! No Christmas for you!”
“David, dear David, sorry you were naughty! Love, Santa Claus!”
“This is really sad! I mean, David is just trying to be good, but he’s— see, a little boy! It’s normal! I mean, his elbows are just on the table for a second! Give him a break!”
“Oh, now you don’t care! Now you don’t care about—”
“Wake up, David! You were dreaming!”
“He was dreaming!”
[Applause]
[Music]
“Yes, David! It’s Christmas!”
“Yay! Dear David, Merry Christmas! Love, Santa Claus!”
“Well, it all worked out well in the end! He was a little bit naughty, but he got everything on his Christmas list!”
“Not the Ferrari!”
“He didn’t get the Ferrari!”
“You’re going to pout because you didn’t get a Ferrari? Sounds like a couple of naughty kids who deserve lumps of coal!”
“No, please!”
“It’s Christmas, David!” by David Shannon.
