???? Kids Book Read Aloud: A Little Spot of Anxiety

Hello, My Reading Friends!

Hi there! It’s Ani, and I’m so happy you’re here to read with me. Are you ready for a fun story?

Feeling Worried?

Do you sometimes feel worried or scared? That’s called anxiety. A little bit of worry is okay because it helps keep us safe. But too much worry can be a bit too much! Let’s learn how to calm those worries with a story called “A Little Spot of Anxiety” by Diane Alber.

Meet the Spots

In our story, there’s a peaceful spot and a gray anxiety spot. The anxiety spot shows up when you’re worried or scared. It’s just one of the many feelings we have, like sadness or anger. But we feel best when we’re in our peaceful spot!

Turning Worries into Calm

Your anxiety spot might make you worry about trying new things, like playing soccer or taking a test. It might ask, “What if I’m not good?” But you can answer, “I can do this!” This helps turn your anxiety spot into a peaceful spot.

Keeping Worries Small

It’s okay to have small worries, but when they get too big, they can make you feel yucky. Sometimes, big worries can give you a tummy ache or make you sweat. That’s your body saying, “Let’s calm down!”

Ways to Calm Down

Did you know you can keep your anxiety spot small by eating healthy and getting enough sleep? Doing fun things like drawing or listening to music can also help. If your anxiety spot surprises you, here’s a trick to make it smaller:

The Magic Trick

Look at your hand. Imagine five gray spots on your fingers and one green spot on your palm. With your other hand, draw a line from a gray spot to the green spot and say, “From the tip of my finger to the middle of my palm, I can do this. I can be calm.” Imagine your worry moving to the green spot and becoming calm.

Blow the Worry Away

If your worry gets too big, take a deep breath and blow it away. Now, all you see is a calm green spot. Breathing slowly helps calm your anxiety spot.

Practice Makes Perfect

Try this trick when you’re nervous, like on the first day of school or at a party. Say, “From the tip of my finger to the middle of my palm, I can do this. I can be calm.” Then take a deep breath and blow the worry away!

Celebrate Your Calm

Every time you calm your anxiety spot, your peaceful spot gets stronger. Celebrate when you do it! If your worries ever feel too big, talk to a parent or trusted adult. They can help you find more ways to feel better.

See You Next Time!

I hope you enjoyed our story today. Remember, you can always calm your worries. See you next time!

  • Can you think of a time when you felt worried or scared? What did you do to feel better? Share your story with us!
  • What are some fun activities you like to do that help you feel calm and happy? How do they make you feel?
  • If you could teach a friend the magic trick from the story, how would you explain it to them? Why do you think it helps to calm down?
  1. Spot the Feelings: Go on a feelings hunt around your home or classroom. Look for pictures, toys, or objects that remind you of different feelings like happiness, sadness, or worry. Share with a friend or family member why each item makes you think of that feeling. This will help you recognize and talk about your emotions.

  2. Calm Spot Craft: Create your own “calm spot” using art supplies. Draw a big green spot on a piece of paper and decorate it with things that make you feel happy and calm, like stars, hearts, or smiley faces. Hang it somewhere you can see it every day to remind you to stay calm when you feel worried.

  3. Worry Jar: Make a worry jar with a small jar or box. Whenever you feel worried, write or draw your worry on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. At the end of the week, look at your worries with a parent or teacher and talk about how you can make them smaller. This helps you understand that worries can be managed and don’t have to stay big.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“A Little Spot of Anxiety: A Story About Calming Your Worries,” written and illustrated by Diane Alber.

Hi! I’m a peaceful spot, and this gray spot is an anxiety spot. What is an anxiety spot? It’s worry. Your anxiety spot can show up when you are feeling worried, nervous, anxious, or scared. Anxiety is one of the many emotions we can experience every day. Other emotions are sadness and anger. We all have these emotions inside us, but we feel the best when we are in our peaceful spot.

Your anxiety spot makes you worry a lot, especially when you try new things. Remember when you first tried to play soccer? You might have thought, “What if I am bad at this?” Or when you had to take a test, you might have worried, “What if I fail?” Every time your anxiety spot asks you “What if,” remember you can always answer with “I can do this.” That will help you change your anxiety spot to a peaceful spot like me.

It’s okay to have small anxiety spots because sometimes worrying protects you. But when your worries become too big or too many, it doesn’t feel very good, and it can make you miss out on things that are fun and good for you. Sometimes, when your anxiety begins to grow, it can cause a tummy ache or make you start to sweat. This is your body telling you that you need to manage your anxiety spot quickly.

Did you know there are things you can do to keep your anxiety spot from getting too big? Like making sure you are eating healthy and getting plenty of rest. This will give your body enough energy to help prevent your anxiety spot from showing up. Music, drawing, and writing can help you express your worries through art instead of letting your anxiety spot grow.

Sometimes, you end up in a situation where your anxiety spot surprises you, and it can start growing really fast. But before you panic, I want to show you how to quickly shrink your anxiety spot.

Okay, look at your hand. Now imagine five gray spots on your fingers and one green spot on your palm, just like this. Now, with your pointer finger on your other hand, I want you to draw an imaginary line from one of the gray spots to the green spot on your palm and repeat after me: “From the tip of my finger to the middle of my palm, I can do this. I can be calm.” Imagine the worry on your gray spot or your anxiety spot is traveling to the green spot, your peaceful spot, and becoming calm.

Now for the second part: this worry grew too big and cannot stay. Take a deep breath and blow it away. Imagine yourself blowing the worry off your gray spots. Now all you can see is a calm green spot. Taking slow, deep breaths is a great way to calm your anxiety spot. Now that it’s not near you anymore, it can’t make you worry.

Okay, now that you have learned a way to calm your anxiety spot down, let’s try it in situations where your anxiety spot surprises you.

Like your first day of school, being away from your parents or guardians can make you scared and anxious. Or meeting new people can make you worried that you won’t fit in. This is a perfect time to practice our little trick: “What if I don’t fit in?” From the tip of my finger to the middle of my palm, I can do this. I can be calm. This worry grew too big and cannot stay. Take a deep breath and blow it away. I can do this. I will see you later.

Or when you show up to a party and your anxiety spot comes with you: “What if they don’t like me?” Sometimes it’s hard to be around new people, but worrying only makes your anxiety spot grow. Instead, practice our little trick: “From the tip of my finger to the middle of my palm, I can do this. I can be calm.” This worry grew too big and cannot stay. Take a deep breath and blow it away. I can do this. This party is fun!

The more times you can shrink your anxiety spot down, the stronger your peaceful spot becomes. Celebrate when you are able to shrink down your anxiety spot. Use that confidence to help you in new situations where your anxiety spot shows up. If you need some help, just remember our little trick: “From the tip of my finger to the middle of my palm, I can do this. I can be calm.” This worry grew too big and cannot stay. Take a deep breath and blow it away.

If your worries ever get too big, be sure to talk to Mom or Dad or another trusted adult so that they can help you find ways to learn to manage them.

I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
