Meet Horace Henway

Today, we’re going to meet a boy named Horace Henway. Horace is just like you and me, a regular kid. He lives across the street from an elderly neighbor named Mr. Hunt. Mr. Hunt is a bit forgetful and often loses things in his very messy house. He shares his home with an old black cat named Sly.

Helping Mr. Hunt

One day, Mr. Hunt lost his teeth! He told Horace, “I didn’t take care of my real teeth, so now I have fake ones. If I can’t find them, I’ll have to eat crumbs!” Horace decided to help Mr. Hunt find his missing teeth.

The Big Search

Horace searched everywhere! He looked in all the rooms, behind doors, and even in the fishbowl. But he couldn’t find the teeth anywhere. Just when he was about to give up, the clever cat Sly came over. Sly seemed to know where the teeth were all along!

A Lesson Learned

After helping Mr. Hunt, Horace learned an important lesson. He promised to take good care of his own teeth. Horace decided to brush and floss every day and visit the dentist regularly. This way, his teeth would stay healthy and strong.

  1. Horace decided to help Mr. Hunt find his missing teeth. Have you ever helped someone find something they lost? How did it make you feel?
  2. Mr. Hunt learned to take better care of his teeth. What are some things you do every day to take care of yourself, like brushing your teeth or washing your hands?
  3. Horace learned an important lesson about taking care of his teeth. Can you think of a time when you learned something important from helping someone else?
  1. Teeth Care Challenge: Just like Horace learned to take care of his teeth, let’s see how well you can take care of yours! For one week, keep a “Teeth Care Chart” at home. Every time you brush your teeth in the morning and at night, put a sticker or draw a smiley face on the chart. At the end of the week, count how many times you brushed your teeth. Share your chart with your family and talk about why taking care of your teeth is important.

  2. Find the Hidden Object Game: Horace had to search everywhere to help Mr. Hunt find his teeth. Now, it’s your turn to be a detective! Ask a family member to hide a small object somewhere in a room. Use your observation skills to find it. Once you find it, switch roles and hide the object for them to find. Discuss how being observant can help us in everyday life.

  3. Story Time with a Twist: Imagine you are Horace and write a short story about another adventure where you help someone. What did you learn from this new adventure? Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them what they think Horace learned this time. This will help you think about how helping others can teach us valuable lessons.

Hello, my reading friends! It’s Ani. I’m so glad you’re here! Don’t forget to subscribe if you enjoy reading stories with me, and make sure to watch all the way through because I’ll be doing some shout-outs at the end. Are you ready for a story?

Today, we’ll meet a boy who helps his elderly neighbor and learns a very important lesson in the process. Let’s find out what it is as we read “Horace Henway Brushes It Off,” written and illustrated by Kathleen Arthur.

I’m just a regular kid. My name is Horace Henway. Today, I did a favor for a friend who’s old and gray. He lives across the street and goes by Mr. Hunt. He loses things a lot; he’ll tell you that up front. His house is very cluttered—I’ve heard it called a pigsty. He lives there by himself with an old black cat named Sly.

One day, he lost his toaster, and I found it in his chair. Today, he lost his teeth and all his stuff somewhere. Young Horace, he explained, “I admit my mistakes. I neglected my teeth, and now I wear fakes. My real teeth rotted from too much decay. I didn’t brush them, and they withered away. If I don’t find my fakes, I’ll chill with my gums, but if that doesn’t cut it, I’ll have to eat crumbs.”

This morning when I woke, they were gone from this jar. I’ve looked all around; they couldn’t be far. I said, “Don’t worry, Mr. Hunt. It may take me a while, but I’ll look in every place, in every heap, and every pile.”

So I looked in all the rooms and behind all the doors, from the tops of the ceilings to the bottoms of the floors. I even checked the fishbowl while the hungry cat stared, but the only thing I found was a fish swimming scared. I searched between the seats of his old pickup truck and in his rusty mailbox, without a turn of luck.

I was about to give up and call it a day when the old cat Sly started walking my way. He rubbed against my legs and looked up with a grin. Their cat knew all along where the teeth had been.

And now I, Horace Henway, make a promise to myself: to take care of my teeth as a part of good health. I’ll go to the dentist and take their advice. Every day, I will floss and brush at least twice, so my teeth will be real and stay right where they’re at—not kept in a jar or worn by a cat.

Horace learned how important it is to brush and floss every day to keep your teeth healthy and strong.
