Hello, my reading friends! I’m Ani, and today I’m visiting my grandkids. My oldest grandson is here to help me with our book reading. Let’s meet him!
Hi, my name is Noah, and I’m excited to read with you today! We’re going to have a lot of fun, so make sure to stay with us until the end because we have some special shout-outs to share!
The book we’re reading is called “Mandy’s Pet Shop: A Pet Shop for Monsters” by Zach Shada and DC Cody, with illustrations by Nathan Molson. If you have a copy, grab it and read along with us!
In the story, a parent and child visit Mandy’s Pet Shop looking for a new pet. Mandy tells them they have all kinds of pets, even some unusual ones! There are big pets, blue pets, and even bears with two hats and cats with nine eyes!
The child wants a fun pet, so Mandy introduces them to Tacosaurus, a playful dinosaur. But the child thinks Tacosaurus is too strong for tug-of-war and wants something cute instead.
Mandy then shows them Blibby the Bean, who will grow into a tree someday. The child finds this strange and just wants a regular pet.
Mandy explains that the shop has many unique creatures like Zoggers, a yeti, and even a statue that runs! There are lippers, dippers, and mud that can talk. But the child just wants a simple pet like a fish or a dog.
Mandy assures them that while these monsters might seem scary or strange, they can be great friends if given a chance. The child starts to think maybe having a monster as a pet could be fun after all.
We loved reading the story with you! Now, it’s time for some shout-outs. Hello to Elijah in Los Banos, California; Alejandra in Windham, Maine; Olivia and Natalie in Maryland Heights, Missouri; Lily Heartfelder in New Lebanon, Ohio; and Raiden and Jasmine in Chula Vista, California!
Thank you for joining us today. We hope you enjoyed the story, and we can’t wait to read with you again. See you next time!
Create Your Own Monster Pet: Imagine you have your own pet shop like Mandy’s. Draw a picture of a monster pet you would like to have. Think about what makes your monster special. Does it have any unique features like Tacosaurus or Blibby the Bean? Write a short story about an adventure you and your monster pet might have together. Share your drawing and story with your family or friends!
Monster Pet Observation Walk: Go on a walk around your neighborhood or a nearby park with a family member. Look for animals or objects that could inspire a monster pet. Maybe a tree looks like it has eyes, or a cloud looks like a giant fluffy creature. Take notes or draw what you see. When you get home, discuss with your family how these real-life observations could be turned into fun monster pets.
Monster Pet Care Plan: Think about what it would be like to take care of a monster pet. What would it eat? Where would it sleep? How would you play with it? Create a care plan for your monster pet, including a daily schedule. Share your plan with your class or family and discuss how caring for a monster pet might be similar or different from caring for a regular pet like a dog or a fish.

Mandy’s Pet Shop: A Pet Shop for Monsters by Zach Shada and DC Cody, illustrations by Nathan Molson.
“Are you Mandy? Is this your shop? My son wants a pet, so we decided to stop.”
“Yes, I’m Mandy. This is my store. We have every pet you can think of and then a few more. We have big ones and blue ones, pets of every size. We have bears with two hats and cats with nine eyes.”
“Nine eyes is too much. Two hats is a lot. I want something fun. What else have you got?”
“You want something fun? Why didn’t you say? Meet Tacosaurus! He loves to play.”
“This isn’t a pet; it’s a dinosaur, and he’s way too good at tug-of-war. It seems to me this is not his style.”
“I want something cute that will make me smile.”
“You want something cute? Why didn’t you say? Meet Blibby the Bean! She’ll be a tree someday.”
“This is the strangest thing I’ve ever met. I don’t want a tree; I just want a pet.”
“You just want a pet? The pet shop has tons! We have Zoggers, a yeti, and a statue that runs. We have lippers and dippers and mud that can talk. We have pickers and zippers and a weightlifting croc.”
“This is too much! You don’t understand. I don’t want some monster from some crazy land. I just want a pet like a fish or a dog, not a Tacosaurus or a three-headed frog.”
“These monsters seem scary or strange at a glance, but they make great friends if you give them a chance.”
“Maybe it was wrong to get so upset. It could be nice having a monster for a pet.”
I just loved being able to read that story with Noah. Didn’t he do a great job?
