???? Kids Book Read Aloud: MONSTER TROUBLE!

Hello, my fabulous reading friends! Welcome to my story time. Today, we’re going to read a fun book called “Monster Trouble!” by Lane Fredrickson, with pictures by Michael Robertson. Let’s find out what happens when Winifred Schnitzel meets some silly monsters!

Meet Winifred Schnitzel

Winifred Schnitzel is a brave girl. She isn’t scared of anything—not even monsters, spooky noises, or scary movies. She loves watching werewolves and pirates on TV. But there’s one problem: every night, monsters come to her room and keep her awake!

Monsters Everywhere!

These monsters try to be scary. Some growl, some make funny noises, and some are slimy or hairy. But Winifred thinks they’re cute, not scary! Still, they keep her awake, and she gets too tired to do her schoolwork or play with her friends.

Winifred’s Clever Plans

Winifred decides to stop the monsters. She reads a book called “Monsters Beware” and makes a sticky trap to catch them. But the monsters are too strong, and they use the sticky string to play games instead!

Trying Something New

Next, Winifred tries using stinky cheese to make the monsters sneeze. But the monsters just order food and keep having fun. Poor Winifred is so sleepy she falls asleep in class and during ballet.

The Perfect Solution

Winifred is tired of the monsters, so she builds lots of traps. But when the monsters come back, she’s already asleep. In her sleep, she gives a monster a big kiss! The monster is so surprised it runs away, and all the other monsters do too!

Winifred’s Secret

Winifred discovers that monsters don’t like kisses. So now, whenever a monster sneaks into her room, she just gives it a kiss, and it runs away! Winifred can finally sleep well at night and have fun during the day.

I hope you enjoyed our story about Winifred and her monster adventures. Remember, sometimes a little kindness can solve big problems. See you next time for more fun stories!

  • What do you think makes Winifred so brave? Can you think of a time when you were brave like Winifred?
  • Why do you think the monsters were scared of kisses? Have you ever been surprised by something that wasn’t scary after all?
  • If you had monsters in your room, what fun or silly way would you use to make them leave? Can you think of a creative solution like Winifred did?
  1. Monster Observation Journal: Create a “Monster Observation Journal” where you can draw and describe the monsters you imagine. Think about what makes them funny or silly, just like the monsters in Winifred’s room. What sounds do they make? What do they look like? Share your drawings with your family and friends and see if they can come up with their own monster stories!

  2. Build a Monster Trap: Use materials like paper, string, and tape to design your own monster trap. Think about what might attract a monster and how you could catch it. Remember, Winifred used sticky traps and stinky cheese. What will your trap use? Once you’ve built your trap, explain to someone how it works and what kind of monster it might catch.

  3. Kindness Experiment: Just like Winifred discovered that a kiss could scare away monsters, think of a time when being kind helped solve a problem. Share your story with the class or write it down. Then, try to do one kind thing each day for a week and see how it makes you and others feel. Keep a list of your kind actions and share your experiences with your classmates.

Winifred Schnitzel isn’t afraid of anything, but she does need her sleep, and the neighborhood monsters won’t leave her alone. What will she do? Let’s find out as we read “Monster Trouble.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me.

I’m reading “Monster Trouble” by Lane Frederickson, with illustrations by Michael Robertson.

Winifred Schnitzel was never afraid—not of monsters, ghouls, or the noises they made. She loved scary movies, werewolves, thunder, and pirates who bury their treasure. Still, Winifred’s bedtime was hardly spook-free. The neighborhood monsters would not let her be. Each night, they’d show up and attempt to be scary. Some would growl, some would belch, some were slimy, some hairy, but all of their monsterly mayhem was moot because Winifred Schnitzel thought monsters were cute.

Still, night after night, all those monsters kept creeping into Winifred’s room, interrupting her sleep. Too tired for math, too exhausted for fun, she finally decided those monsters were done. She ordered a book titled “Monsters Beware” and constructed a sticky string monster snare.

But that night, the big monsters all showed up. The sticky string snare got so stretched that it burst. There were monsters on bedposts and stuck to the wall; they made slingshots from string and were having a ball. Winifred sighed; they were louder than ever. She knew that she needed to try something clever.

So she brought in some stinky old Limburger cheese. The label said it makes big monsters sneeze. The monsters just called up the Goblin Street Deli; they ordered in bagels and fish eyeball jelly. Winifred barely got through the next day; she dozed off in art class and snoozed through ballet. She decided that’s it; it had to get tough. She was tired of monsters—enough was enough!

So she built every spook trap in “Monsters Beware” and one of her own called the Prickly Bum Chair. Poor Winifred yawned; she was so very sleepy. She was starting to look a bit spookily creepy. When the monsters showed up with their howling and roaring, Winifred Schnitzel was already snoring.

She was dreaming of puppies when a monster went hiss. She reached out and gave it a big sleepy kiss. The monster yelled, and all the others were heaving. One gagged, and a big monster shouted, “I’m leaving!” Winifred knew that despite their uniqueness, she discovered that monsters have one silly weakness.

So she puckered and pouted and kissed them all good. Those monsters screamed, running as fast as they could. Now Winifred sleeps very soundly at night. In the daytime, she’s happy and perky and bright. But sometimes she finds that a monster’s crept in right around bedtime with a monsterly grin. She ignores all the growling, roaring, and hissing since the one thing that all monsters hate most is kissing.

Winifred found the perfect solution so she could get a good night’s sleep. I hope you enjoyed our story today! See you next time!
