Hello, reading friends! Today, we’re going to meet a little squirrel who is a bit scared to leave his tree. Let’s find out if he can learn to be brave and explore the world outside as we read “Scaredy Squirrel” by Melanie Watt. If you have the book, grab it and read along with me!
Scaredy Squirrel lives in a cozy nut tree. He thinks the world outside is full of scary things like spiders, poison ivy, green aliens, bees, germs, and sharks. So, he stays in his tree where he feels safe and happy.
But staying in the tree all the time can be a little boring. The view never changes, and he eats the same nuts every day.
Every day, Scaredy Squirrel does the same things:
Just in case something unexpected happens, Scaredy Squirrel has an emergency kit. It has things like a parachute, bug spray, a mask, gloves, a hard hat, soap, and band-aids.
One day, a bee flies by, and Scaredy Squirrel panics! He accidentally knocks his emergency kit out of the tree and jumps after it. But guess what? He discovers he can glide like a flying squirrel!
He feels so happy and free as he glides through the air. When he lands safely, he realizes that maybe the world outside isn’t so scary after all.
After his adventure, Scaredy Squirrel decides to change his routine a little:
Scaredy Squirrel is slowly becoming braver and exploring new places. He even leaves his emergency kit in a bush because he doesn’t need it right now.
The end. I hope you enjoyed our story today! Remember, sometimes trying new things can be fun and exciting. See you next time for more story adventures!
Explore Your Own Fears: Just like Scaredy Squirrel, everyone has things they are afraid of. Draw a picture of something that makes you feel scared. Then, think about one small thing you could do to feel a little braver about it. Share your drawing and idea with a friend or family member.
Create an Emergency Kit: Scaredy Squirrel has an emergency kit to help him feel safe. What would you put in your own emergency kit? Gather some items from around your house that make you feel safe or happy, like a favorite toy or a book. Explain to someone why you chose each item.
Observe and Discover: Go on a mini-adventure in your backyard or a nearby park. Look for things that you find interesting or exciting, like a colorful leaf or a busy ant. Draw or write about your discoveries. How did it feel to explore something new, just like Scaredy Squirrel?
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hello, reading friends! It’s Ani. Today, we’ll meet a little forest friend who’s afraid to leave the safety of his tree. Let’s see if he can learn that it’s okay to venture out sometimes as we read “Scaredy Squirrel.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me.
**Scaredy Squirrel** by Melanie Watt
**Warning:** Scaredy Squirrel insists that everyone wash their hands with antibacterial soap before reading this book.
Scaredy Squirrel never leaves his nut tree home sweet home. The unknown can be a scary place for a squirrel. A few things Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of include tarantulas, poison ivy, green martians, killer bees, germs, and sharks. So he’s perfectly happy to stay right where he is.
**Advantages of never leaving the nut tree:**
– Great view
– Plenty of nuts
– Safe place
– No tarantulas, poison ivy, green martians, killer bees, germs, or sharks
**Disadvantages of never leaving the nut tree:**
– Same old view
– Same old nuts
– Same old place
In Scaredy Squirrel’s nut tree, every day is the same. Everything is predictable, and all is under control.
**Scaredy Squirrel’s daily routine:**
– 6:45 a.m. – Wake up
– 7:00 a.m. – Eat a nut
– 7:15 a.m. – Look at view
– 12:00 p.m. – Eat a nut
– 12:30 p.m. – Look at view
– 5:00 p.m. – Eat a nut
– 5:31 p.m. – Look at view
– 8:00 p.m. – Go to sleep
But let’s say, just for example, that something unexpected did happen. You can rest assured that Scaredy Squirrel is prepared. A few items in Scaredy Squirrel’s emergency kit include:
– Parachute
– Bug spray
– Mask and rubber gloves
– Hard hat
– Antibacterial soap
– Calamine lotion
– Net
– Band-aids
– Sardines
**What to do in case of an emergency according to Scaredy Squirrel:**
1. Panic
2. Run
3. Get help
4. Put on kit
5. Consult exit plan
6. Exit tree if there is absolutely no other option
**Exit plan notes:**
– Watch out for green martians and killer bees in the sky.
– Do not land in the river; if unavoidable, use sardines to distract sharks.
– Look out for poison ivy and tarantulas roaming the ground.
– Keep in mind that germs are everywhere.
– Remember, if all else fails, playing dead is always a good option.
With his emergency kit in hand, Scaredy Squirrel watches day after day until one day, a bee appears. Scaredy Squirrel jumps in panic, knocking his emergency kit out of the tree. This was not part of the plan! He jumps to catch his kit and quickly regrets this idea. The parachute is in the kit—uh-oh! But something incredible happens: he starts to glide!
Scaredy Squirrel is no ordinary squirrel; he’s a flying squirrel! He forgets all about the bee and feels overjoyed, adventurous, carefree, and alive until he lands in a bush and plays dead.
After some time, Scaredy Squirrel realizes that nothing horrible is happening in the unknown today, so he returns to his nut tree. All this excitement has inspired Scaredy Squirrel to make drastic changes to his life.
**Scaredy Squirrel’s new and improved daily routine:**
– 6:45 a.m. – Wake up
– 7:00 a.m. – Eat a nut
– 7:15 a.m. – Look at view
– 9:37 a.m. – Jump into the unknown
– 9:45 a.m. – Play dead
– 11:45 a.m. – Return home
– 12:00 p.m. – Eat a nut
– 12:30 p.m. – Look at view
– 5:00 p.m. – Eat a nut
– 5:31 p.m. – Look at view
– 8:00 p.m. – Go to sleep
As for the emergency kit, Scaredy Squirrel is in no hurry to pick it up just yet. Do you see where the emergency kit is? It’s in a poison ivy bush.
The end. Scaredy Squirrel is becoming braver as he slowly ventures into places that he was too anxious to go before. I hope you enjoyed our story today! See you next time. Subscribe for more story time and don’t forget to click the bell so you’ll know each time a new video is posted!
