Hello, my reading friends! I’m Ani, and I’m so happy to read with you today. I want to say a big hello to Ethan, Henry, Rosemary, Eli, Olivia, Bonnie, and Mika! Are you ready for a fun story?
Today, we’re going to read a special book about why we stay home. It’s called “Susie Learns About Coronavirus,” written by Samantha Harris and Devin Scott, with pictures by Harriet Rodis. Let’s find out what Susie learns!
One night, Susie couldn’t sleep, so she asked her big sister, Millie, “Are you awake?” Millie said, “I am now! What do you want, Susie?”
Susie said, “I’m happy we’re all staying home together. It’s fun!” Millie agreed but reminded Susie, “We need to remember why we’re home. It’s because of coronavirus.”
Susie asked, “What is coronavirus?” Millie explained, “Coronavirus is a tiny germ called a virus. Germs are everywhere, like on our bodies and on things we touch. Some germs are good, some are bad, and some don’t do much. Coronavirus is a bad germ that can make people sick.”
Millie said, “We stay home to keep people like Grandma, Grandpa, and our neighbor Mr. Jones safe. This is called quarantine.”
Millie told Susie, “People with coronavirus might cough, have a fever, or a sore throat. We can help by washing our hands, wearing masks, and staying apart from others. This is called social distancing.”
Susie said, “I miss my friend Alex from school.” Millie understood and said, “We can still talk to friends and family by video chatting, calling, or sending messages. It’s important to check on people who might be alone.”
Susie asked, “Will it be like this forever?” Millie said, “No, it will get better. We just have to keep helping each other. It’s nice to know we’re keeping everyone safe.”
I hope you liked our story today! Remember to stay safe and take care of each other. See you next time for more stories!
Germ Hunt: Let’s go on a germ hunt! With the help of a grown-up, explore your home and find places where germs might hide, like doorknobs, light switches, and toys. Use a magnifying glass if you have one to pretend you’re a detective looking for tiny germs. After your hunt, wash your hands together and talk about why it’s important to keep these areas clean.
Handwashing Experiment: Try a fun experiment to see how soap works. Sprinkle some pepper on a plate of water. The pepper represents germs. Dip your finger in the water and see what happens. Now, put some soap on your finger and dip it back in the water. Watch how the “germs” run away! Talk about why soap is important for washing away germs.
Draw Your Feelings: Draw a picture of how you feel about staying home and keeping safe. Do you feel happy, sad, or maybe a little of both? Share your drawing with a friend or family member and talk about your feelings. Remember, it’s okay to miss your friends and family, and talking about it can help.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

**Why We Stay Home**
*Susie Learns About Coronavirus*
Written by Samantha Harris and Devin Scott

“Are you awake, Susie?” asked Millie. Susie was having a hard time sleeping, so she figured she would see if her older sister was still awake.
“Oh, I am now,” Millie responded. “What do you want, Susie?”
“I was just thinking how happy I am that me, you, Mommy, and Daddy have been staying home together. It’s fun,” Susie replied.
“Yes, it is nice having Mommy and Daddy home with us,” Millie responded. “But we have to make sure that we remember the reason that we’re all at home right now.”
“Yes, I know, Millie. Because of coronavirus.”
“But what is coronavirus anyway?” asked Susie.
“Coronavirus is a virus. A virus is a really small germ that you cannot see. There are other kinds of germs too, like bacteria and fungi. Germs are everywhere: our bodies, chairs we sit on, even the door handle to your favorite ice cream parlor. Some germs are good, some are bad, and some don’t really do anything. The coronavirus is a bad germ, and it can make some people really sick. Some of the people at greatest risk of getting sick are Grandma and Grandpa and Mr. Jones, our neighbor, whose body has a hard time fighting off germs. So everyone has been staying home to make sure we don’t spread coronavirus to them. This is what quarantine means.”
“Some signs that someone is sick with coronavirus are cough, fever, and sore throat. We can do our part by preventing the spread of coronavirus by washing our hands, wearing a mask when we go to the grocery store, and standing six feet apart while we wait in line. This is called social distancing.”
“Oh, I see,” says Susie.
“But Millie, since we’ve been at home, I’ve really missed my friend Alex from school.”
“I understand, Susie. It can be very hard not to see friends and family that don’t live with us, but there are still ways that we can say hello to them. We can video chat with them on Mommy’s computer, we can call them on the phone, and we can also send them messages to check on them. Some people do not have parents or even siblings with them, and they are alone in quarantine, so it is important that we check on them.”
“I understand, Millie. But Millie,” Susie replies, “is this how it is going to be from now on?”
“No, Susie, it will get better. We just have to keep sticking together. It’s nice to know the reasons why we need to keep ourselves and others safe during the quarantine. I hope that you are all staying safe because I care about each one of you.”
