In this lesson, Ryan, along with his friends Craig and Tara, introduces a fun story time featuring the book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Numeroff. The story illustrates the concept of cause and effect through the mouse’s humorous requests following the initial act of giving him a cookie. The lesson encourages imagination and engagement by inviting children to think about what they would give the mouse next.
  1. What did the mouse want after he got a cookie?
  2. Can you think of something else the mouse might ask for?
  3. Why do you think the mouse keeps asking for more things?

Welcome to Story Time!

Hi there! I’m Ryan, and I’m here with my friends Craig and Tara. Today, we’re going to read a fun story together. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Our Special Guest

We have a special guest today, Tara Erickson! She’s going to help us read the story. Isn’t that exciting? Let’s welcome her to our story time!

The Book We’re Reading

Today, we’re reading a book called “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” It was written by Laura Numeroff and has beautiful pictures by Felicia Bond. Let’s find out what happens in the story!

What Happens First?

If you give a mouse a cookie, guess what? He’ll want a glass of milk to go with it! And when you give him the milk, he’ll probably ask for a straw to drink it with. Isn’t that silly?

More Fun Requests

After he finishes drinking, he’ll ask for a napkin to wipe his face. Do you know what a napkin is? It’s a little cloth or paper you use to clean up!

Looking in the Mirror

Next, the mouse will want to look in a mirror to check if he has a milk mustache. Do you know what a milk mustache is? It’s when you have a little milk left on your upper lip after drinking. It’s funny!

Time for a Haircut?

When the mouse looks in the mirror, he might see that his hair needs a trim. So, he’ll ask for some nail scissors to give himself a little haircut. What a busy mouse!

Learning with the Mouse

This story teaches us about cause and effect. That means when you do one thing, it can make something else happen. Just like when you give a mouse a cookie, he might ask for more things!

Let’s Have Fun!

Wasn’t that a fun story? You can think about what you would do if you gave a mouse a cookie. What would you give him next? Use your imagination and have fun!

  1. What do you think might happen if you gave a mouse a cookie? Can you imagine what other things the mouse might ask for? Share your ideas!
  2. Have you ever had a time when you asked for one thing and then needed something else? What was it, and how did it make you feel?
  3. Can you think of a time when you helped someone and it led to something else happening? What did you learn from that experience?
  1. Cookie Chain Reaction: Let’s create our own cause and effect chain! Start with a simple action, like giving a toy a cookie. What do you think the toy will ask for next? Draw a picture of each step in your chain reaction. Share your story with a friend and see how many steps you can come up with!

  2. Milk Mustache Fun: Let’s make our own milk mustaches! Pour a little milk into a cup and take a sip. Check in the mirror to see if you have a milk mustache. Can you make it bigger or smaller? Try it with a friend and see who can make the funniest milk mustache!

  3. Cause and Effect Hunt: Go on a cause and effect hunt around your home or classroom. Find examples of cause and effect, like turning on a light switch (cause) and the light turning on (effect). Draw or write down what you find and share it with the class. How many examples can you discover?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Oh yeah! Welcome to Story Time with Ryan Lagan, Craig Tovey, and Tara Erickson. Today’s book is “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond.

Let’s get started!

If you give a mouse a cookie, he’s going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him the milk, he’ll probably ask you for a straw. When he’s finished, he’ll ask for a napkin.

Napkin? Anyone?

No? Thank you!

We’re reading!

Alright, well, there if you need him, we won’t.

Then he’ll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn’t have a milk mustache.

Oh no, Ryan! That’s your actual mustache!

Oh no! When did this happen?

When he looks into the mirror, you might notice his hair needs a trim, so he’ll probably ask for a pair of nail scissors.

Gonna come for that mustache!

When he’s
