Meet Miss Smith and the Haunted Library

Today, we’re reading a book called “Miss Smith and the Haunted Library” by Michael Garland. Let’s dive into this spooky and exciting adventure!

A Surprise at the Library

One chilly fall morning, Zack was sitting in his classroom, looking out the window. He was waiting for his favorite teacher, Miss Smith, to arrive. When she finally came in, she had some exciting news. “Good morning, class! Today, we’re going to visit the library. There’s someone special I want you to meet,” she said.

Zack was thrilled as he followed Miss Smith to the library, which was just down the street. The library was a big, dark building, and Zack felt a little nervous as they walked inside.

Meeting the Mysterious Librarian

Inside the library, Miss Smith introduced the class to the librarian, Virginia Creeper. She had blue hair, pale skin, and deep dark eyes. Zack was surprised by her spooky appearance!

Miss Smith asked Virginia Creeper if she had any spooky stories to share. “Oh yes,” the librarian replied. “I have some in this incredible storybook!”

Stories Come to Life!

Virginia Creeper began reading from the storybook, and something magical happened. Characters from the stories started coming to life! The Headless Horseman, the Hound of the Baskervilles, and even ghosts appeared right in front of the class.

More characters like Frankenstein, Count Dracula, and the Wicked Witch of the West joined the fun. Zack and his classmates were amazed and a little scared, but they couldn’t stop watching.

A Spooky Party

Then, something unexpected happened. Virginia Creeper stopped reading and handed out cookies and apple cider to everyone. The library turned into a party! The Headless Horseman gave horse rides, Dracula told jokes, and the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk lifted kids high in the air. Everyone was having a great time!

Time to Clean Up

Suddenly, Virginia Creeper noticed the seniors’ book club coming to the library. “Oh no! We need to clean up before they see all this!” she said. Miss Smith and the class quickly tidied up the room.

Zack helped by reading the last page of each story, which made the characters go back into the book. “Bye, Frankenstein! Bye, Dracula!” he said as they disappeared.

Back to School

Just as the seniors arrived, everything was back to normal. Miss Smith led the class to check out their books, and everyone thanked Virginia Creeper for the fun adventure. Zack couldn’t wait to read more about the characters they had met.

What a magical day at the library! Zack wondered what exciting story they would read next time.

My best friend growing up was Spencer Smith. Today’s book is “Miss Smith and the Haunted Library” by Michael Garland. Let’s get started!

“Miss Smith and the Haunted Library” by Michael Garland.

Zack stared out of the classroom window at the dreary fall morning as he waited for his favorite teacher to arrive. Suddenly, Miss Smith burst through the door. “Good morning, class! We’re going to visit the library today. There’s someone special I want you to meet.”

Zack smiled when Miss Smith picked up the incredible storybook before heading out the door. The library was right down the block from school. Zack wearily eyed the dark stone building as they walked single-file up the sidewalk. The creaky door swung open, and they tiptoed inside.

“Class,” Miss Smith said, “this is our librarian, Virginia Creeper.” Zack stared in shock at the librarian’s blue hair, pale skin, and deep dark eyes. He hadn’t been expecting this.

“Hello, Mr. Creeper,” said Zack in a high-pitched voice. “How can I help you today?”

“This is the season for spooky stories. Do you have any suggestions?” Miss Smith asked.

“Oh yes,” the librarian replied. “Quite a few! I mean, some of them are in your incredible storybook.”

“What’s this incredible storybook you keep mentioning? Is it really incredible? I’ve never heard of it.”

Miss Smith handed the book to Virginia Creeper. The librarian opened it and said, “I’ll just read a little from my favorite scary stories.”

Miss Creeper began to read about a dark haunted wood. Zack shivered. Then, with a thunder of hooves, the Headless Horseman leapt out of the book. The children’s mouths hung open in disbelief. Virginia Creeper started reading again, and the Hound of the Baskervilles pounced from the book.

More reading brought the clinking and rattling of chains as Marley’s ghost appeared. New stories brought out the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frankenstein, and Count Dracula. The class started to cling to Miss Smith. The great black horse snorted and stomped his hooves, but Virginia Creeper just kept on reading as a flock of ghosts flew from the book.

When Captain Hook and the Wicked Witch of the West entered the room, Zack wondered if he should run for the door. The scary creatures were crowding the room, but that didn’t stop Virginia Creeper from reading about Rumplestiltskin, the Queen of Hearts, and the Big Bad Wolf.

Zack looked up and saw the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk bump his head on the ceiling. Next, the room was filled with eerie sounds of whiffling and burbling. Virginia Creeper read on as the flaming-eyed Jabberwocky arrived in a puff of smoke.

Then the strangest thing happened: Virginia Creeper stopped reading and started to pass out cookies and apple cider to the children. The mood changed, and to Zack’s amazement, a party started!

“Is it a party? Should we go back in? What kind of cookies?” All the creatures seemed happy to be at the library. The Headless Horseman gave horse rides, and the kids lined up. Someone brought out a ball and played fetch with the Hound of the Baskervilles. Dracula told jokes, and the giant gently picked up some kids and lifted them high in the air. Everyone was enjoying the fun; the characters didn’t seem so scary now.

Suddenly, Virginia Creeper’s happy smile changed to a worried frown when she looked out the window and saw the seniors’ book club coming up the walk. “Oh my,” said Miss Creeper, “I almost forgot! It’s time for the seniors. They can’t see this; it will give them such a fright! Go and tidy up!”

When I saw her at the door, the librarian told Miss Smith. Virginia Creeper blocked the impatient readers from entering while Miss Smith ran around in a tizzy, picking up overturned chairs and straightening the bookshelves. Outside, the seniors were getting grouchy, but inside, the kids and the characters had become too silly to notice.

“Can I help?” Zack asked. Miss Smith handed the incredible storybook to Zack. “Remember,” Miss Smith said, “we have to finish each story so that the characters will go back into the book. Read the last page of each tale while I deal with this mess.”

Zack opened up the book and quickly finished all the stories. One by one, the characters went back into the incredible storybook: “Bye, Frankenstein! Bye, ghosts! Bye, Dracula! Bye, Hound!”

Just as Zack finished the last page, the puzzle book club burst into the room. “Okay class, it’s time to check out your books,” Miss Smith said. She guided the class toward the big front desk. Everyone thanked Virginia Creeper before marching down the library steps and heading back to school with borrowed books under their arms. The children were looking forward to reading more about all the characters they had just met.

Zack smiled and wondered what they would read tomorrow.
