Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a fun story time with Ryan, Craig, and our special guest, Corey. We’re going to read a book called “Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins” by James Dean. Are you ready? Let’s begin!
Once upon a time, there were five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first pumpkin said, “Oh my, it’s getting late!” Isn’t that silly? Pumpkins can’t really talk or sit on gates, but that’s what makes this story fun!
The second pumpkin said, “There are witches in the air.” But guess what? The witch is actually a frog, and the broom is a scooter! That’s so funny! On Halloween, we can imagine all sorts of magical things happening.
The third pumpkin said, “But we don’t care.” The fourth pumpkin said, “Let’s run and run and run!” But pumpkins don’t have legs, so they can’t really run. It’s just pretend!
The fifth pumpkin said, “I’m ready for some fun! Trick or treat, trick or treat!” Then, the wind blew, and the lights turned out. What do you think happened next? Maybe the pumpkins went on a spooky adventure!
And then, the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight. Bye-bye, pumpkins! They went off to have more Halloween fun. Isn’t that a silly and spooky story?
Thank you for joining us for story time! We hope you enjoyed “Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins.” What are you going to dress up as for Halloween? Maybe a ghost, a vampire, or even a cat robot! Have a spooky and fun Halloween!
Pumpkin Imagination Game: Gather the children in a circle and give each child a small pumpkin or a picture of a pumpkin. Ask them to imagine what their pumpkin would say if it could talk. Encourage them to come up with a funny or spooky sentence, just like in the story. Let each child share their pumpkin’s sentence with the group. This activity helps children use their imagination and creativity.
Pumpkin Rolling Race: Set up a simple obstacle course using cones or other markers. Give each child a small pumpkin and have them roll it through the course. You can time each child to see who can roll their pumpkin the fastest. This hands-on activity helps children understand the concept of rolling and movement, just like the pumpkins in the story.
Observation Walk: Take the children on a short walk around the school or playground. Ask them to look for things that remind them of Halloween or the story, such as pumpkins, witches, or anything spooky. Encourage them to share what they see and how it relates to the story. This activity helps children connect the story to the real world and enhances their observation skills.

Hey, I’m Ryan Lagott and I’m Craig Tovey. Welcome to Story Time with Ryan Lagott and Craig Tovey! This week’s special guest reader is Corey Clifford, and today’s book is “Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins” by James Dean.
Let’s get started!
“Five Little Pumpkins” by James Dean.
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late!”
Okay, guys, there are some issues here. First of all, pumpkins can’t climb ladders, they can’t sit on gates, and they can’t talk. That’s what makes it spooky! I talked to a pumpkin yesterday; his name was Nathaniel. He was just wearing an orange shirt—spooky!
The second one said, “There are witches in the air.”
Another issue here: the witch is a frog, the broom is also a scooter, and it’s flying. No way! It’s Halloween; witches come out at midnight. Frogs don’t get brooms, and anyone can fly until 4 AM. I’ve never heard of these rules before!
The third one said, “But we don’t care.”
The fourth one said, “Let’s run and run and run!”
Uh, you can’t run without legs!
[Music]
The fifth one said, “I’m ready for some fun! Trick or treat, trick or treat!”
[Music]
The wind blew, the lights turned out. What’s going to happen next? Cats are probably turning into robots—cat robots! Why would that happen? That’s insane!
[Applause]
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
Bye-bye!
[Music]
Happy Halloween!
Oh, so the skateboards just disappeared—spooky!
Guys, I don’t know if you know what that means… spooky!
