Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to hear a wonderful story called The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. Are you ready? Let’s dive into the ocean and meet some colorful fish!
In the deep blue sea, there lived a very special fish. This fish was the most beautiful fish in the whole ocean! His scales were shiny and sparkled with colors like blue, green, and purple. Some scales even glittered like silver!
All the other fish admired him and called him Rainbow Fish. They wanted to play with him, but Rainbow Fish was too proud. He just swam by, showing off his beautiful scales.
One day, a little blue fish swam up to Rainbow Fish. “Please, Rainbow Fish,” he said, “can I have one of your shiny scales? They are so pretty, and you have so many!”
Rainbow Fish was not happy. “Give you one of my special scales? No way!” he said. The little blue fish felt sad and swam away to tell his friends.
After that, the other fish didn’t want to play with Rainbow Fish anymore. He felt very lonely. “What good are my beautiful scales if no one wants to be my friend?” he wondered.
Rainbow Fish decided to talk to a wise starfish. “Why doesn’t anyone like me?” he asked.
The starfish said, “Maybe the octopus can help you. Go and see him.”
Rainbow Fish found the octopus in a dark cave. The octopus said, “If you give a shiny scale to each fish, you will be happy.”
Rainbow Fish was unsure. “Give away my scales? How will that make me happy?”
Just then, the little blue fish came back. “Please, Rainbow Fish, just one little scale,” he asked.
Rainbow Fish thought for a moment and decided to give the little fish a tiny scale. The little fish was so happy! Rainbow Fish felt something new inside. It felt nice!
Rainbow Fish started sharing his scales with other fish. The more he shared, the happier he felt. Soon, all the fish had shiny scales, and Rainbow Fish had lots of friends!
Rainbow Fish kept one special scale for himself, but he was very happy. Now, he had friends to play with, and he wasn’t lonely anymore.
“Come play with us, Rainbow Fish!” the other fish called.
“Here I come!” said Rainbow Fish, and he swam off to join his friends with a big, happy splash!

*The Rainbow Fish* by Marcus Pfister.
A long way out in the deep blue sea, there lived a fish. There were probably a lot of them—millions, in fact. But this fish was not just an ordinary fish; he was the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean. His scales were every shade of blue, green, and purple, with sparkling silver scales among them.
The other fish were amazed at his beauty. They called him Rainbow Fish. “Come on, Rainbow Fish,” they would call. “Go play with us!” But the Rainbow Fish would just glide past, proud and aloof, letting his scales shimmer.
One little blue fish followed after him. “Rainbow Fish,” he called, “wait for me! Please give me one of your shiny scales. They are so wonderful, and you have so many!”
“You want me to give you one of my special scales?” the Rainbow Fish cried. “Get away from me!”
The little blue fish swam away, shocked and upset. He told all his friends what had happened. From then on, no one would have anything to do with the Rainbow Fish. They turned away when he swam by.
“What good were the dazzling, shimmering scales with no one to admire them?” Now he was the loneliest fish in the entire ocean.
One day, he poured out his troubles to the starfish. “I really am beautiful. Why doesn’t anybody like me?”
“You’ll find out,” said the starfish. “But if you go beyond the glories you were given, the octopus may be able to help you.”
The Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was very dark inside, and he couldn’t see anything. Then, two eyes caught his gaze, and the octopus emerged from the darkness.
“I’ve been waiting for you,” said the octopus with a deep voice. “The waves have told me your story. If you give a glittering scale to each of the other fish, you will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy.”
“I can’t,” the Rainbow Fish started to say, but the octopus had already disappeared into a dark cloud of ink.
“Give away my scales? My beautiful, shiny scales? Never! How can I ever be happy?”
Suddenly, he felt the light touch of a fin. The blue fish was back. “Rainbow Fish, please don’t be angry. I just want one little scale.”
The Rainbow Fish wavered. “Only one very small, shimmery scale?” He thought, “Well, maybe I wouldn’t miss just one.” Carefully, the Rainbow Fish pulled out the smallest scale and gave it to the little fish.
“Thank you! Thank you very much!”
The little blue fish bubbled playfully as he took the shiny scale. A peculiar feeling came over the Rainbow Fish. For a long time, he watched the little blue fish swim back and forth with his new scale glittering in the water.
“What is this feeling? It’s nice, but I don’t know how to describe it.”
“It’s called being nice,” said the little blue fish. “Try thinking about somebody else. It feels good!”
The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing. It didn’t take long before the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by other fish. Everyone wanted a glittering scale!
The Rainbow Fish shared his scales left and right, and the more he gave away, the more delighted he became. When the water around him filled with glimmering scales, he finally felt at home among the other fish.
Eventually, the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left—his most prized possession. Yet he was very happy.
“Come on, Rainbow Fish!” they called. “Go and play with us!”
“Here I come!” said the Rainbow Fish, and with a happy splash, he swam off to join his friends.
