Hi there! I’m Rick Tobey, and I’m so happy you’re here for Story Time with Ryan. If you enjoy our stories, don’t forget to subscribe, give us a thumbs up, or leave a comment!
Today, we’re diving into a fun book called “Unicorn Things” by Bob Shay. It’s all about Ryan and his magical mom. Let’s see what happens!
Ryan thinks his mom is magic. When he was little and got a scrape on his knee, she’d put a band-aid on it, and after two weeks, the scrape would disappear! Wow, maybe your mom is magic too!
Things got super exciting when a unicorn moved into the neighborhood. Ryan thought he was cool riding his bike to school, but the unicorn made it rain cupcakes at the talent show! Imagine dancing while cupcakes fall from the sky!
Ryan loves magic tricks. He can pull coins from behind your ear! One day, he found a pink unicorn at school. The unicorn was amazing, and Ryan wondered how to be friends with him.
The unicorn loves cheese pizza! It’s creamy and delicious, just like a magical treat. But the unicorn also eats glitter and rainbows, which isn’t very good for his tummy.
Ryan’s mom is so magical that she can disguise sprinkles and ice cream as healthy foods like broccoli and carrots. But Ryan thinks it’s still sprinkles and ice cream!
The unicorn has special hooves that help him climb mountains. Ryan thinks his horn is just for show, but together, they make a great team!
Ryan and the unicorn become friends, just like you and your best buddy. They decide to go to the park and play together. Ryan always knew they’d be friends!

Magic in Everyday Life: Think about something that feels magical in your life, just like Ryan thinks his mom is magic. It could be a special meal, a fun game, or a family tradition. Draw a picture of this magical moment and share it with the class. What makes it feel magical to you?
Unicorn Adventure: Imagine a unicorn moved into your neighborhood. What magical things would you like it to do? Write a short story or draw a comic strip about an adventure you and the unicorn would have together. Share your story with a friend and see what magical adventures they came up with!
Magic Disguise Experiment: Just like Ryan’s mom disguises sprinkles and ice cream as healthy foods, try to create your own “magic disguise” at home. With the help of an adult, make a healthy snack look like a fun treat. It could be fruit arranged to look like a pizza or veggies shaped like a unicorn. Share your creation with your family and see if they can guess what it really is!

Today’s book is “Unicorn Things” by Bob Shay. Let’s get started!
“Unicorn Things” is a great book about Ryan and his magical mom. Bob Shay wrote this book for me and my magical mom. Ryan, is your mom really magic?
Yeah! When I was little and I’d get a scrape on my knees, she would put a bandaid on it, and two weeks later, the scrape would be gone.
Wow, then my mom’s magic too!
A lot has been happening around here since a unicorn moved in. I thought I was pretty cool when I rode my bike to school.
Oh, the fun we had! He made it rain cupcakes at the big talent show. I was dancing and showing off my moves.
Yeah, when he stepped up with some serious skills and won first prize, it was amazing!
But that’s not all; it gets even better! Check out this great magic trick that I totally invented. Okay, close your eyes. Riffle, riffle… keep them closed. Ta-da!
Boy, your eyes were closed! I pulled this quarter out from behind your ear. Nice, right?
Okay, close your eyes again. Whoa! Two dimes and two nickels were behind Craig’s ear. Ta-da!
Well, when I got to school to try it out, I saw a pink unicorn who was so great. How can anyone be friends with that guy?
Look at me! I’m a unicorn, and I think I’m so cool!
Well, this unicorn is coming, and I can smell something heavenly—cheese pizza!
Oh my gosh, cheese! So creamy and delicious! It’s also good smeared on a tin can or sprinkled on some garbage.
I can eat glitter and rainbows, but I have a sensitive stomach. I’ll need sprinkles and ice cream.
Ryan, that’s really not good for you!
Yeah, but my mom’s magic, so she disguises them as broccoli, carrots, celery, and chicken. But I’m pretty sure it’s all sprinkles and ice cream!
Okay, wow! What is up with your hooves? Those things are out of control!
These bad boys are cloven, which means they’re split at the end. They let me stand on steep hills or climb to the tops of mountains.
Oh man, I can’t stand climbing those regular hooves!
Don’t be so hard on yourself! Just look at your fantastic horn!
That thing is just for show. All it’s good for is pointing. I can’t play soccer with it.
Not you, though! I bet those awesome horns are perfect for soccer.
With your magic and my awesomeness, we’d be an unstoppable team!
Craig, they’re just like us!
Really? How so?
Because we’re an unstoppable reading team!
That’s cool, right?
I think so!
Yeah, love it!
Justice Unicorn! Nice, right?
Yeah, let’s go to the park and play!
You know something, unicorn? I had a feeling we’d be friends.
Oh man, I wish I had a unicorn as my best friend!
I once had a toy unicorn that was my best friend.
Really?
Yeah, and he could talk!
No way!
Yeah, but only when my mom was in the room and I wasn’t looking directly at her.
Ah, your mom really is magic!
