A Special Hello

We want to say a big hello to Miss Chen’s class in Rockville, Maryland. Keep being awesome, everyone!

Today’s Book: “Be Quiet” by Ryan T. Higgins

Today, we’re reading a special book called “Be Quiet” by Ryan T. Higgins. It’s a very unique book because it doesn’t have any words! Let’s dive in and see what happens.

The Wordless Adventure

*Shh…* This book is all about pictures, so we have to be super quiet. Oops, I talked! Let’s try to stay silent and enjoy the story through the pictures.

Even though we can’t talk, we can still have fun looking at the beautiful illustrations. Look, there’s a bird! Oh, wait, we’re not supposed to talk!

Characters in the Book

Every book needs some fun characters. How about a bear? Or maybe a cute kitten with a tiny nose and big eyes? What do you think?

Adding Some Action

What if we had a superhero who doesn’t make any noise? We could call him Captain Quiet, the silent hero! But remember, no talking!

Thinking About Sounds

Have you ever heard the saying, “If a tree falls in the woods and no one is listening, does it make a sound?” It’s a fun way to think about being quiet.

The End of Our Quiet Story

Even though we talked a little, we had a great time with our wordless book. Sometimes, pictures can tell a story all by themselves. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Thanks for joining us for Story Time. We can’t wait to share another adventure with you soon!

  • What do you think the characters in the book are doing when you look at the pictures? Can you make up your own story about them?
  • Have you ever tried to tell a story without using any words? How did you do it, and what was it about?
  • Why do you think it’s important to sometimes be quiet and just listen or look? Can you think of a time when being quiet helped you notice something special?
  1. Picture Storytelling: Create your own wordless story! Gather some paper and crayons or markers. Draw a series of pictures that tell a story without using any words. Think about what happens first, next, and last. Once you’re done, share your story with a friend or family member and see if they can understand the story just by looking at your pictures.

  2. Silent Nature Walk: Go on a silent walk with your class or family. Try to be as quiet as possible and use your eyes to observe the world around you. What do you see? Are there any animals, plants, or interesting objects? After the walk, draw or write about what you noticed. Discuss how being quiet helped you notice things you might not have seen otherwise.

  3. Sound Experiment: At home or in class, try a simple experiment to explore sounds. Fill a few glasses with different amounts of water and gently tap them with a spoon. Listen to the different sounds each glass makes. What happens if you add more water or take some away? Talk about how sound can change and what it means to be quiet or loud.

Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hello, I’m Veronica, and I’m Creek Toby. Welcome to Story Time with Veronica and Creek Toby! Remember, if you like what you see, follow us on Instagram or visit our website. You can watch all of our vlogs there or send us a message. You can say anything!

I want to give a shoutout to Miss Chen’s first-grade class in Rockville, Maryland. Keep on rocking in Maryland!

Okay, today’s book is “Be Quiet” by Ryan T. Higgins. Let’s get started!

*Shh…*

This book does not have words. It’s a wordless book! Can I help? Oops, I’m talking. Stop! The book already started; you’re messing it up. Please let me stay in the book. I promise to be quiet.

I’ll be extra quiet!

This book is wordless.

Hey, guys, without shouting like this, we’re making a wordless book. But I’ve promised to be quiet, so I can’t tell you about it.

I love those; they’re very artistic! Can I be in it? Yes, but we won’t tell Rupert since we’re not supposed to be talking.

You’re putting too many words in the book! What are we going to talk about then?

I’m really interested in this river you were discussing earlier.

It’s just a river!

Okay, so no talking about the fancy river.

This book needs strong illustrations.

Oh, like this bird!

No, you’re not supposed to talk!

Rupert is right; this book needs some strong but silent types.

What about him?

He’s strong and silent!

Every book needs a bear in it.

I don’t know; he looks grumpy.

What about a kitten? Kids love kittens!

Look at his cute little nose and big eyes!

I think it’s getting a little too friendly.

Stop filling my brilliant piece of work with nonsense!

You’re not taking this seriously!

What do you suppose to be, a president?

No, I’m Vincent van Mouse!

I don’t think everyone will get that.

We’re simple; we’re potatoes!

Stop talking and start changing the pictures around!

I want to talk about pictures, specifically fancy rivers!

No one promised you a fancy river!

You need to give it up; the words “promised,” “river,” and “fancy” have all been said.

They have been said, but that’s not the point!

We’re not going to get to that because…

Rupert is right; no more artistic stuff.

This book needs action!

We should have a silent superhero instead!

We’ll call him Captain Quiet, the vocabulary vigilante!

Wow, kaboom!

No, no, no!

I think Rupert just said it; I’m going to…

What do you think that means?

I think it means he should have gone to the bathroom before the book started.

Guess what?

I mean, let’s see…

Is that a cheese sandwich that thinks it’s a hummingbird?

No!

Be quiet means babies don’t make a sound, right?

It’s like that saying about a tree falling in the woods.

How does it go?

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is listening…

Did the tree make a sound?

It’s hard to tell with all the shouting!

Should we try again?

I’ve had it! All you do is talk, talk, talk!

Can’t you be quiet for just one page?

I try to do one thing, make it a wordless book, and you choose to ruin it!

This book is filled with words.

Why can’t you do a simple thing like not say anything?

This is art!

I’m quiet; I’m not saying anything!

But you just keep talking!

Shh, be quiet!

This book does not have words.

The end!

I thought the book turned out okay. I hope we get to do another one soon!

Wow, we didn’t get to talk about any pictures because of all the talking!

But there were actually pictures the whole time!
