If you have the book, go get it so you can read along with me.
The story is called “Birdie Makes a Friend,” written by Adam Baronowski and illustrated by Zeke Suns. Let’s see what happens!
One day, Birdie says, “Hello, Owl!”
Owl replies, “Hello, Birdie! Guess what?”
“What’s that, Birdie?” asks Owl.
“I have a new friend!” says Birdie excitedly.
“Is that so?” wonders Owl.
“Yep! Owl, meet Worm,” Birdie introduces.
“Hello!” says Worm.
Owl is surprised and asks, “Your friend is a worm?”
“He sure is!” Birdie says happily.
Owl is curious, “And how exactly did you make friends with a worm?”
Birdie explains, “Well, Owl, I was taking a walk and found some amazing smelling flowers. I decided to pick some, but one flower was stuck. I pulled and pulled, and when it finally came out, there was a worm on it.”
“That’s me!” says Worm.
“I see. And now we are friends,” says Owl.
Birdie reassures Owl, “Oh, but don’t worry, Owl, we are still friends too!”
“I wasn’t worried. I just have two best friends now,” Owl smiles.
Owl asks, “Don’t you think it’s a little strange that you have a worm as a friend?”
“Why is that?” Birdie wonders.
“Because birds eat worms!” Owl explains.
Birdie promises, “I would never eat my friend! In fact, I promise to never eat a worm for as long as I live.”
“That’s great, Birdie, but there are a lot of birds around here. What are you going to do about them?” Owl asks.
“You’re right, Owl. There are birds everywhere, and they look hungry,” Birdie realizes.
Just then, Worm appears wearing a disguise!
“What is Worm wearing?” Owl asks.
“Birdie!” calls Worm.
“Worm!” Birdie replies.
“Who? There are no worms here!” Worm says, trying to hide.
“That disguise is not going to fool anyone!” Owl laughs.
“Of course it will! No bird will ever know that it is me,” Worm insists.
“Hey, Jerry!” a bird calls out.
“You know him?” Owl asks.
“Hey, Worm!” another bird says.
“Hey, Mike! Sure, I do! I know all the birds around here. That’s Mike. We play cards every week,” Worm explains.
“Well then, Owl, what do you think about that?” Birdie asks.
“I think he can take off the disguise now!” Owl chuckles.
“Actually, this is a good look for me. See you later, Owl!” Worm waves.
Don’t you just love it when friendship overcomes differences and obstacles? I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
Friendship Bracelet Craft: Let’s make friendship bracelets to celebrate Birdie’s new friendship with Worm! Gather some colorful yarn or string and beads. Help the children string the beads onto the yarn, encouraging them to choose colors that remind them of their friends. As they work, ask them to think about what makes their friendships special and how they can be a good friend like Birdie.
Role-Playing Game: Encourage the children to act out the story of Birdie, Owl, and Worm. Provide simple props like a toy bird, owl, and worm, or let them use their imagination. Ask them to think about how Birdie felt when meeting Worm and how they can make new friends in unexpected places. Discuss how they would feel if they were Worm and how they would like to be treated by others.
Nature Walk Observation: Take the children on a short nature walk around the school or playground. Ask them to look for different animals or insects and think about how these creatures might become friends, just like Birdie and Worm. Encourage them to share their observations and ideas about how different animals can help each other or play together, even if they are very different.
