The lesson explores NASA’s Perseverance rover, which was sent to Mars to investigate the possibility of past life on the planet and gather valuable data for future human exploration. The rover’s thrilling landing and its long journey from Earth highlight the excitement and challenges of space exploration, as it continues to send back important information about Mars. Through this mission, students learn about the potential for discoveries beyond our planet and the advancements in technology that make such explorations possible.
  1. What is the main job of the robot called Perseverance on Mars?
  2. Why do you think scientists want to know if there was ever life on Mars?
  3. How do you feel about the idea of humans visiting Mars one day?

Exploring Mars with Perseverance

Have you ever thought about whether there might be life on other planets? Scientists at NASA have been curious about this too! They decided to send a special robot called Perseverance to Mars, which is one of our closest neighbors in space. The goal is to find out if there was ever life on Mars and to learn more about the planet.

Meet Perseverance: The Mars Rover

Perseverance is like a robot car with lots of cool tools. These tools help it gather important information about Mars, which is also known as the red planet because of its color. Scientists hope that one day, humans might be able to visit Mars, and Perseverance is helping them learn how to make that happen.

The Exciting Landing

We even have a video of Perseverance landing on Mars! It was a thrilling moment when the rover finally touched down. Imagine hearing, “20 meters off the surface… we’re getting signals from Mars. Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance is safely on the surface of Mars, ready to begin seeking signs of life.” Everyone was so excited and happy!

The Long Journey

Did you know it took Perseverance more than 200 days to travel from Earth to Mars? That’s a really long trip! We hope it packed some snacks for the journey. Now that it’s on Mars, Perseverance is busy exploring and sending back lots of interesting information.

Isn’t it amazing what we can learn about space? Who knows what exciting discoveries Perseverance will make next!

  • What do you think it would be like to travel to Mars? Would you want to go on such a long journey? Why or why not?
  • If you could send a robot like Perseverance to any planet or place, where would you send it and what would you want it to find out?
  • Imagine you are a scientist working with Perseverance. What kind of things would you be most excited to discover on Mars, and why?
  1. Build Your Own Rover: Gather some simple materials like cardboard, bottle caps, straws, and glue. Try to build your own model of a Mars rover. Think about what tools you would include if you were designing a rover to explore another planet. Once you have built your rover, share it with your family or friends and explain what each part does.

  2. Space Observation Journal: Start a journal where you can write down or draw things you observe in the sky. Look at the stars, the moon, and even the clouds. Try to imagine what it would be like to see Mars from Earth. Write or draw what you think Perseverance might be seeing on Mars right now.

  3. Imagine Life on Mars: Think about what life on Mars might look like. Do you think there are plants, animals, or maybe something completely different? Draw a picture or write a story about what you imagine life on Mars could be like. Share your ideas with your classmates or family and see what they think!

Have you ever wondered if there’s been life on other planets? Well, scientists at NASA have too. They sent a rover called Perseverance to our neighbor Mars to find out. The scientists also want to see if they can send humans on Mars missions someday. The Perseverance rover looks like a kind of robot car and has different kinds of instruments to gather information about the red planet.

Oh, and we have a video of the Perseverance landing on Mars!

“20 meters off the surface… we’re getting signals from Mars. Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance is safely on the surface of Mars, ready to begin seeking signs of life.”

That was amazing! Woohoo! They must be so happy! It took Perseverance more than 200 days to get there. I hope it brought snacks! That’s all on the Perseverance.

Chuck wonders out.
