share us on:

In today’s Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie, young learners explored feelings and changes in their lives, emphasizing the importance of connection during challenging times. They introduced three “superpowers” to help navigate these changes: being thankful, practicing belly breathing for calmness, and being a helper to others. The lesson encouraged children to reflect on how they can use these superpowers to positively impact their world.
  1. What is one thing you can say thank you for today?
  2. How do you feel when you take a big belly breath?
  3. Can you think of a way to help someone today?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hello, young learners! Today, we’re joining Caroline and her friend Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids team for a fun and exciting circle time. It’s a special part of the day where we get to connect, learn, and have fun together!

How Are You Feeling Today?

Caroline and Sophie start by asking how everyone is doing. Sophie shares that she’s been spending a lot of time with her family, cooking, reading, playing with trains, and drawing. But she also misses seeing her friends and going outside. Caroline understands, as many of us are experiencing changes and spending more time at home.

Understanding Changes

Caroline and Sophie talk about changes. Sophie wonders if changes are like changing clothes, and Caroline explains that changes can also mean staying inside and not going to school. Sophie even received letters from friends sharing their experiences with changes, like reading more or missing playing in a band.

Discover Your Superpowers!

Today, Caroline and Sophie want to share three superpowers that can help us during times of change. Let’s explore them together!

Superpower 1: Be Thankful

Being thankful means thinking about who or what you can say thank you to. It could be the bus driver, your crayons, or even the trees and birds outside. Saying thank you makes us feel happy and helps us appreciate the good things in the world. Can you think of two things you’re thankful for?

Superpower 2: Belly Breathe

Belly breathing is a way to feel calm and relaxed. Here’s how you do it: breathe in slowly through your nose, let the air fill your belly like a balloon, and then breathe out slowly. Try it with Caroline and Sophie! This superpower can be shared with friends and family to help them feel calm too.

Superpower 3: Be a Helper

Being a helper means using your skills to assist others. You can help by stirring dinner, playing with a sibling, or folding clothes. Another important way to help is by washing your hands well to keep everyone healthy. Helping others is a powerful way to make a difference!

Remember Your Superpowers!

Let’s recap the three superpowers: Be thankful, belly breathe, and be a helper. Think about how you can use these superpowers today to make a positive impact on the world around you. Even in times of change, you have the power to change the world with your actions.

That’s all for today, friends! Caroline and Sophie look forward to seeing you tomorrow. Bye for now!

  • Can you think of a time when something changed in your life, like starting a new school year or moving to a new house? How did it make you feel, and what did you do to feel better?
  • What are some things you are thankful for today? How does saying thank you to people or things around you make you feel?
  • Have you ever helped someone with a task or a problem? What did you do, and how did it make you feel to be a helper?
  • Thankfulness Tree: Create a thankfulness tree at home. Draw a big tree on a piece of paper or cardboard. Cut out leaf shapes from colored paper. Each day, write or draw something you are thankful for on a leaf and stick it onto the tree. Watch your tree grow with all the things you appreciate!

  • Belly Breathing Buddy: Find a small stuffed animal or toy and place it on your belly. Lie down and practice belly breathing by watching the toy rise and fall as you breathe in and out. This will help you see how your belly moves and make belly breathing more fun!

  • Helper Challenge: Think of one way you can help someone at home each day. It could be setting the table, organizing your toys, or helping a sibling with a task. Share your helper story with your family and see how many different ways you can be a helper throughout the week.
