The Story of “A Tale by Fire”

At night, I dream. I peek out from tiny holes in the sky and see the darkness all around. But I smile because this is where my light shines bright. When I wake up, I rise and shine even more.

What am I, you ask? I am a spark that, with a little courage, becomes something bigger. With time and care, I grow. As I grow, I learn to help others grow too. I dance, play, and sometimes get a little wild, but I always find a way to make things better.

What am I, you ask? I am the light that shows the way home. I try new things, sometimes I succeed, and sometimes I fall. But I always get back up and try again. I dream of a big world full of possibilities.

What am I, you ask? I am the star that brings life. I am a part of a beautiful story where many worlds shine together as one.

What am I, you ask? I am everything that lives inside you.

  • What do you think it means to have a “light inside us”? Can you think of a time when you felt your own light shining bright?
  • The story talks about trying new things and sometimes falling. Can you share a time when you tried something new? How did it feel, and what did you learn from it?
  • If you were a spark that could grow into something bigger, what would you want to become? How would you help others grow too?
  1. Light Hunt: Go on a “light hunt” around your home or classroom. Look for different sources of light, like lamps, flashlights, or sunlight coming through a window. Discuss with a friend or family member how each light source makes you feel. Does it make you feel warm, happy, or safe? Draw a picture of your favorite light source and share why it’s special to you.

  2. Shine Your Light: Think about something you are really good at or something you love to do. It could be drawing, singing, helping others, or playing a sport. This is your special light! Create a small poster or a drawing that shows how you shine your light. Share it with the class or your family and talk about how your light can help others feel happy or inspired.

  3. Starry Night Story: Imagine you are a star in the night sky, just like in “A Tale by Fire.” Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your adventures as a star. What do you see from up in the sky? How do you help others with your light? Share your story with a friend or family member and talk about how stars are important in our world.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you today? I hope you’ve had time to read lots of books on your own. Today, we have a book called “A Tale by Fire” by John David Boyle. Are you curious to find out what this book is about? Well, I am too! Let’s get started.

“A Tale by Fire”

At night, I dream. I peek out from tiny holes in the sky and see the darkness all around and smile, for this is where my light still gets to shine. And from my dream, I wake once more to rise and reign.

What am I, you say? I am the spark that, with a leap of faith, becomes something more. With time and care, I begin to grow, and as I’m nurtured, I’ll learn to nurture in return. I dance and play and roam and rage and lose control, but in my wake, my wounds heal, becoming ever more beautiful.

What am I, you say? I am the beacon lighting the way forward and the way home. I test my limits to soar and ignite and evolve, and even still, I stumble and fall. For a moment, I ponder all I have built and all I have destroyed, and then I rise again and again until I spread my wings and glimpse a larger world whose borders are but figments of imagination.

What am I, you say? I am the star that gives life. I’m the gleaming tapestry of time, telling a tale of countless worlds shining together as one.

What am I, you say? I am all that lives in you.

And that was “A Tale by Fire.” A bit intriguing, don’t you think? I like it! And you know what? We’re all made of light, and at the end of the day, we’re all the same.
