Hello there! I’m so glad you’re here for a fun story. Today, we’re going to enjoy a tale called “A Tale of Two Beasts,” written and drawn by Fiona Roberton. Let’s dive into this exciting adventure together!
Once upon a time, I was walking home from Grandma’s house through the deep, dark woods. Suddenly, I saw a strange little creature stuck up in a tree, looking very sad. I decided to help him out.
“I’ll call you Fang!” I said happily. I wrapped him in my cozy scarf and took him home with me. At home, I gave him a nice bath, a cute hat and sweater, and a bowl of yummy nuts to eat. I even made him a lovely little house and gave him my stuffed lion, Lord Rex, to play with. We went on long walks to keep him healthy, and I showed him to all my friends. They loved him too!
But something was wrong. Fang didn’t seem happy. He looked hot and uncomfortable. I thought he might be sick, so I opened the window to let in some cool air. Then, something surprising happened! Fang took off his clothes, jumped out the window, and ran back to the woods as fast as he could.
I wanted to find him, but it was time for dinner, bath, and bed. I missed Fang and wondered if I would ever see him again. But then, a small furry shadow appeared at the foot of my bed. Fang had come back! He seemed happy to see me, and I started to think that maybe he wasn’t so strange after all. Why do you think he returned?
Now, let’s hear the story from Fang’s side!
One day, I was hanging from my favorite tree, singing to the birds, when a terrible beast captured me! She growled, tied me up, and took me to her secret place. She cleaned me, dressed me in a hat and sweater, and tried to feed me squirrel food. She kept me in a tiny box with nothing to do and made me walk back and forth for no reason. She even showed me to her wild friends, who were just as scary as she was!
I had enough! I made a clever plan to escape. Freedom! I ran back to the deep, dark woods before the beast could catch me. It was peaceful there, but also a bit too quiet and wet. I missed my warm hat, so I sneaked back to get it when it was dark. The beast was waiting for me, but she seemed happy to see me. I started to think that maybe she wasn’t so terrible after all.
This story is special because it shows us that everyone sees things differently. What looks one way to you might look completely different to someone else. Isn’t it fun to see both sides of the story?
Thank you for joining me for this story. Remember, there are many more stories to explore, so keep reading and discovering new adventures!
Role Play the Story: Gather your friends or family and act out the story from both perspectives. One person can be the girl, and another can be Fang. Try to express how each character feels during different parts of the story. How does it feel to be the girl helping Fang? How does it feel to be Fang trying to escape? This activity helps you understand how different characters might feel in the same situation.
Draw Your Own Story: Create a short comic strip showing a day in the life of Fang after he returns to the woods. What adventures does he have? Does he meet new friends? Use your imagination to show what Fang might do next. This will help you think about what happens after a story ends and how characters continue their lives.
Observation Walk: Go for a walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park. Look for animals or interesting things in nature. Imagine what their stories might be. How do they see the world around them? Write or draw what you think their perspective might be. This activity encourages you to think about how different creatures experience their surroundings.

Welcome to Storyline Online, brought to you by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. I’m Sarah Silverman, and today I’m going to read “A Tale of Two Beasts,” written and illustrated by Fiona Roberton.
I was walking home from Grandma’s house through the deep dark woods when I spotted a strange little beast. He was stuck up a tree and whining sadly, so I decided to rescue him.
“I will call you Fang!” I told him, and I wrapped him warmly in my scarf and carried him safely home. I gave him a lovely bath, a new hat and sweater, and a bowl of fresh nuts. I made him a beautiful house and gave him Lord Rex to play with. Lord Rex is my stuffed lion. I took him out for lots of long walks to keep him fit and healthy. I showed him off to all my friends, who loved him nearly as much as I did.
But for some strange reason, the little beast did not look very happy. In fact, he looked rather hot. I hoped he wasn’t sick, so I opened the window to cool him down. But then something terrible happened! He threw off his clothes, leapt out of the window, and ran away as fast as he could back to the deep dark woods.
I wanted to go look for him, but Mama had other plans. Dinnertime! Bathtime! Bedtime! I couldn’t sleep. I missed the little beast and wondered if I would ever see him again. But then a small furry shadow appeared at the foot of my bed. The strange little beast had returned. He seemed pleased to see me, and I began to think that maybe, just maybe… he wasn’t that strange after all. I wonder why he came back?
**A Tale of Two Beasts, Part Two: The Terrible Beast.**
I was hanging from my favorite tree, singing happily to the birds when I was ambushed by a terrible beast! She growled at me, tied me up, and carried me off to her secret lair. She made me clean and dressed me up in a hat and sweater, trying to make me eat squirrel food. She kept me in a tiny box with nothing to do and nowhere to hang from. She made me walk backwards and forwards for no reason. She showed me off to a herd of even wilder beasts, who were just as terrible as she was.
I had had enough! I made a cunning plan and put it into action. Freedom! I raced back to the deep dark woods before the terrible beast could catch me. It was peaceful in the deep dark woods, a bit too peaceful perhaps. Silence. And also, a bit wet. In weather like this, one could do with a nice warm hat. I snuck back to retrieve it under cover of darkness. The terrible beast was waiting for me. She seemed pleased to see me, and I began to think that maybe, just maybe… she wasn’t that terrible after all.
The end.
I love this book. I chose to read this book because everyone has a different way of seeing the same thing. That’s how it is in life. The way you see something is completely different from the way your friend or your mom sees it. Getting to see both characters’ points of view is cool.
