Hello! I’m Victoria.

And I’m Audrey.

We just watched a cool story called “Little Girl, Big Dream.” It’s about an Olympian named Samantha Patrick. The Olympics are the biggest sports event in the world, where athletes from over 200 countries compete!

What Sport Would You Choose?

If you could go to the Olympics, what sport would you pick? I think I’d choose gymnastics, just like Samantha!

Yeah, me too! Gymnastics is so exciting, but with so many people watching, I might feel a little shy!

Let’s Make an Olympic Torch!

Today, we’re going to make our own Olympic torches, inspired by Samantha’s story. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A stapler
  • A glue stick
  • Tissue paper in red, yellow, and orange
  • Foil
  • A paper towel roll
Step 1: Fold, Roll, and Staple

First, fold and roll your paper towel roll, then staple it. It should look like a tube.

Step 2: Cover and Glue

Now, cover the roll with glue. What was your favorite part of Samantha’s story? I liked when she kept going even after hurting her ankle. That’s so brave!

Step 3: Cover with Foil

Gently cover the roll with foil. Be careful not to get glue on yourself! Push any extra foil into the top of the roll.

Step 4: Lay Out Tissue Paper

Lay down the tissue paper in this order: yellow first, then orange, and finally red.

Step 5: Gather and Twist

Make a fist with a hole in it. Put it in the middle of the tissue paper, then use your finger to twist it. It’s like making tie-dye!

Step 6: Place the Tissue Paper Inside the Roll

Once it’s secure, you have your very own Olympic torch!

Okay, I’m ready to show off my torch!

Wait, we still need to tell everyone about the book!

Don’t worry, I’ll do it. You can watch!

You can watch Samantha Pechik’s inspiring Olympic story on Vooks, a kid-safe, ad-free library full of storybooks that come to life. Ask your grown-up to help you explore more stories like this one. You’ll love it!

  • What is your favorite sport, and why do you like it? Have you ever tried playing it or watched someone else play it?
  • If you could create your own Olympic event, what would it be? How would people play it, and what would the rules be?
  • Think about a time when you tried something new or challenging. How did you feel, and what did you do to keep going, just like Samantha in the story?
  1. Design Your Own Olympic Medal: Imagine you are an Olympian who just won a gold medal! What would your medal look like? Use paper, crayons, and string to create your own unique Olympic medal. Think about the shapes, colors, and symbols that represent your favorite sport or something special to you. Once you’re done, wear your medal proudly and share with your friends and family what sport you won it for!

  2. Olympic Sports Exploration: With the help of a grown-up, look up different Olympic sports online or in books. Choose one sport you find interesting and learn a fun fact about it. For example, did you know that table tennis is an Olympic sport? Share your fun fact with your classmates or family. You can even try to mimic some of the movements of the sport you chose in your backyard or living room!

  3. Olympic Torch Relay Game: Gather your friends or family and create a mini torch relay in your backyard or a safe open space. Use the Olympic torch you made from the craft activity. Take turns passing the torch to each other while running or walking around a designated path. Talk about how the real Olympic torch travels around the world before the games begin. How does it feel to be part of a team working together?

I’m Victoria.
And I’m Audrey.
We just watched “Little Girl, Big Dream,” the story of Olympian Samantha Patrick. The Olympics are the world’s biggest sporting event, with athletes from more than 200 countries competing.

If you could go to the Olympics, what sport would you choose?
Probably gymnastics, just like Samantha.
Yeah, what would you choose?
Probably gymnastics too. With so many people watching from all over the world, I’d probably be a bit embarrassed!

Today, we’re going to be making our homemade Olympic torches inspired by this story. Here’s what you’ll need to make one at your house: a stapler, a glue stick, tissue paper in red, yellow, and orange, foil, and a paper towel roll.

**Step 1: Fold, roll, and staple.**
This is what it’s supposed to look like after you’ve rolled it and stapled it.

**Step 2: Cover and glue.**
What was your favorite part of Samantha’s story?
Probably when she kept competing even after she hurt her ankle.
Voila! Covered in glue!

**Step 3: Cover with foil.**
You want to make sure that you do this very gently so you don’t get covered in glue. You’ll want to push any leftover foil from the top into the hole.
Yours looks good!

**Step 4: Lay out tissue paper.**
First, you want to start by putting down yellow, then orange, then red.

**Step 5: Gather and twist.**
Make a fist with the hole in it. Next, put it in the middle of your tissue paper, then put your finger in the middle of that hole and start to twist. It’s just like tie-dye!

**Step 6: Place the tissue paper inside the wall.**
Once it’s firmly secure, you have your torch!

Okay, I’m ready!
Wait, where are you going? We still haven’t told everybody about the book!
I’ll just do it; you can watch.
