We just watched a cool story called “Little Girl, Big Dream.” It’s about an Olympian named Samantha Patrick. The Olympics are the biggest sports event in the world, where athletes from over 200 countries compete!
If you could go to the Olympics, what sport would you pick? I think I’d choose gymnastics, just like Samantha!
Yeah, me too! Gymnastics is so exciting, but with so many people watching, I might feel a little shy!
Today, we’re going to make our own Olympic torches, inspired by Samantha’s story. Here’s what you’ll need:
First, fold and roll your paper towel roll, then staple it. It should look like a tube.
Now, cover the roll with glue. What was your favorite part of Samantha’s story? I liked when she kept going even after hurting her ankle. That’s so brave!
Gently cover the roll with foil. Be careful not to get glue on yourself! Push any extra foil into the top of the roll.
Lay down the tissue paper in this order: yellow first, then orange, and finally red.
Make a fist with a hole in it. Put it in the middle of the tissue paper, then use your finger to twist it. It’s like making tie-dye!
Once it’s secure, you have your very own Olympic torch!

Today, we’re going to be making our homemade Olympic torches inspired by this story. Here’s what you’ll need to make one at your house: a stapler, a glue stick, tissue paper in red, yellow, and orange, foil, and a paper towel roll.
**Step 1: Fold, roll, and staple.**
This is what it’s supposed to look like after you’ve rolled it and stapled it.
**Step 2: Cover and glue.**

**Step 3: Cover with foil.**
You want to make sure that you do this very gently so you don’t get covered in glue. You’ll want to push any leftover foil from the top into the hole.

First, you want to start by putting down yellow, then orange, then red.
**Step 5: Gather and twist.**
Make a fist with the hole in it. Next, put it in the middle of your tissue paper, then put your finger in the middle of that hole and start to twist. It’s just like tie-dye!
**Step 6: Place the tissue paper inside the wall.**
Once it’s firmly secure, you have your torch!
