In this lesson, we explore counting a collection of toy planes by categorizing them into different colors: 5 blue planes, 4 yellow planes, and 6 red planes. By adding these quantities together, we find that the total number of planes in the collection is 15, highlighting the fun of counting and organizing items.
  1. How many blue planes do I have?
  2. If I have 4 yellow planes, how many more planes do I need to have 10 planes?
  3. Can you add the blue, yellow, and red planes together to find out the total number of planes?

Counting My Plane Collection

Let’s have some fun counting my plane collection! I have different colored planes, and we’re going to add them up to see how many I have in total.

Blue Planes

First, let’s look at the blue planes. I have 5 blue planes.

Yellow Planes

Next, there are the yellow planes. I have 4 yellow planes.

Red Planes

Finally, let’s count the red planes. I have 6 red planes.

Total Planes

Now, let’s add them all together to find out how many planes I have in total. We add 5 blue planes, 4 yellow planes, and 6 red planes. So, 5 + 4 + 6 equals 15 planes altogether.

Isn’t it fun to count and see how many planes are in my collection? My collection rules!

  • How many different colors of planes do you have in your own toy collection? Can you count them and share the total with us?
  • If you could add another color of plane to the collection, what color would you choose and why?
  • Can you think of other things you like to collect or count? How do you feel when you see your collection growing?
  1. Plane Hunt: Go on a plane hunt around your house or classroom! Look for toy planes, paper planes, or even pictures of planes. Count how many you can find and sort them by color. Can you find more blue, yellow, or red planes? Share your findings with a friend or family member.

  2. Plane Art: Create your own plane collection using colored paper. Cut out plane shapes and color them blue, yellow, or red. Make sure to have at least 5 blue planes, 4 yellow planes, and 6 red planes. Once you’re done, count them all to see if you have 15 planes in total. Display your collection on a wall or bulletin board.

  3. Counting Challenge: Imagine you have a new color of plane to add to the collection, like green planes. If you have 3 green planes, how many planes will you have in total now? Try adding different numbers of green planes and see how the total changes. Write down your math sentences, like 5 + 4 + 6 + 3 = 18, and share them with your class.
