Welcome to a trip through time! Are you ready to travel to the past? Today, we’re going to learn about the Renaissance.
Emily and Jay were feeling bored. Their dad was a famous scientist who always worked in his lab and never let them in. But one day, they decided to sneak in and see what he was up to. Inside, they found a strange machine with lots of buttons. They were very curious about it!
Their dad had mentioned a new invention—a machine that could take them back in time!
Without thinking much, Emily and Jay stepped into the time machine. Jay accidentally pushed a lever, and suddenly, the machine started talking!
“Hello, children! I’m Timezor. You turned me on, so now we must travel through time together!”
“Fasten your seat belts! We are traveling to Italy during the Renaissance, a wonderful time of discovery and art,” said Timezor.
“Wow! I’ve always wanted to meet the artist Michelangelo and ask him if he painted the Sistine Chapel all by himself,” Emily exclaimed.
When they arrived, they met Michelangelo himself! “Hello, children! Do you like my work? I painted it all myself, even though it took four years,” he told them.
The Sistine Chapel is a famous chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Its ceiling is covered with beautiful paintings by Michelangelo. He was an amazing artist, known for his sculptures and paintings. His most famous sculpture is David, and his most famous paintings are in the Sistine Chapel.
Next, they saw another famous artist, Leonardo da Vinci. “Is that the famous painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci? Leonardo, who is that woman in the painting?” Jay asked.
“That is La Gioconda, also known as the Mona Lisa. Isn’t she beautiful?” Leonardo replied.
The Mona Lisa is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci and is considered the most famous painting in the world. It is kept in the Louvre Museum. Leonardo was born in Vinci in 1452 and was not only a painter but also a sculptor, inventor, architect, musician, and more. He is known as a Renaissance man because he was talented in so many areas. Some of his famous works include the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man.
“Children, we have to go!” said Timezor. “Are you ready to discover more periods from the past? Click on the box to keep traveling through time.”
And with that, Emily and Jay were off on another adventure!
Create Your Own Time Machine: Imagine you have a time machine like Emily and Jay. Draw a picture of what your time machine would look like. Think about what buttons or levers it might have. Share your drawing with a friend and explain where you would go and why. Would you visit the Renaissance, or is there another time period you’re curious about?
Art Exploration: Just like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, you can be an artist too! Find some paper and colors, and try to create your own masterpiece. It could be a drawing, a painting, or even a sculpture using clay or playdough. Think about what inspires you and what story you want your art to tell. Share your artwork with your class and describe what you created.
Renaissance Treasure Hunt: With the help of an adult, explore your home or classroom to find objects that remind you of the Renaissance. It could be a book, a painting, or even a tool. Once you’ve found something, think about how it connects to what you’ve learned about the Renaissance. Write a short story or draw a picture about how this object might have been used during that time.
