In today’s Circle Time, Caroline and her friend Paul celebrated Dinosaur Day with engaging stories and activities centered around dinosaurs. They read “Dinosaur Day,” where friends dressed up as dinosaurs and played a game of Dinosaur Hide and Seek, and explored the T-Rex, learning about its characteristics and fossils. The session concluded with a Dino Show and Tell, where everyone shared their unique dinosaur drawings, fostering creativity and enthusiasm for learning.
  1. What is your favorite dinosaur from the story we read today?
  2. Can you tell me what a paleontologist does?
  3. What fun game did Sandy suggest we play during Dinosaur Day?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time, a special part of the day where we read stories, do fun activities, and learn together. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team, and today, my friend Paul is joining us. Hi, Paul!

It’s Dinosaur Day!

Today is extra special because it’s Dinosaur Day! We have two exciting books to read about dinosaurs. The first book is called “Dinosaur Day” by Cynthia Platt. Let’s dive in!

Dinosaur Day Adventures

In “Dinosaur Day,” the Kids’ Club is celebrating its first-ever Dinosaur Day. Everyone is dressing up as dinosaurs! Peck is a tall T-Rex, Ollo is a pretty pterodactyl, and Kodi is a triceratops. Reya surprises everyone by dressing up as a velociraptor, her favorite dinosaur.

But where is Sandy? When she arrives, she’s not dressed as a dinosaur but as a paleontologist, a scientist who looks for dinosaur fossils. Sandy suggests playing a game of Dinosaur Hide and Seek, where she searches for her friends like a real paleontologist!

Learning with Words

After the story, we play a fun word game. We learn how the letter ‘c’ can make a soft sound, like in “celebrate,” “excited,” and “fancy.” It’s a great way to practice spelling and pronunciation!

Discovering the T-Rex

Our next book is all about the Tyrannosaurus Rex, or T-Rex. This dinosaur had sharp teeth and claws and lived around 70 million years ago. It was huge, weighing as much as two elephants! The T-Rex was a predator, using its big teeth to tear through meat.

We also learn about fossils, which are remains of things that lived long ago. Scientists study these fossils to learn more about dinosaurs like the T-Rex.

Dino Show and Tell

Now it’s time for Dino Show and Tell! Our friends share amazing dinosaur drawings. We see a gigantosaurus, a brontosaurus, a parasaurolophus, and a stegosaurus. Each drawing is unique and shows how much everyone loves dinosaurs!

Goodbye for Now

Thank you for joining us for Circle Time. We hope you had fun learning about dinosaurs and playing games. If you want to share your dinosaur drawings, we’d love to see them next time. Goodbye from Paul, Caroline, and the Khan Academy Kids team. See you soon!

  • What is your favorite dinosaur, and why do you like it? Can you imagine what it would be like to see one in real life?
  • If you could dress up as any dinosaur or a paleontologist like Sandy, which one would you choose and what would your costume look like?
  • Have you ever found something interesting outside, like a rock or a shell? How do you think scientists feel when they discover dinosaur fossils?
  1. Fossil Hunt at Home: Become a paleontologist like Sandy! Ask an adult to hide small objects around the house or yard. These objects can be anything from toy dinosaurs to small stones. Use a small brush or spoon to carefully “excavate” and find these hidden treasures. After finding them, try to draw what you discovered and share your findings with your family or friends.

  2. Dinosaur Dress-Up Day: Just like the Kids’ Club, have your own Dinosaur Dress-Up Day at home. Use clothes, paper, or even cardboard to create your favorite dinosaur costume. Once dressed up, practice your dinosaur roars and movements. Can you walk like a T-Rex or flap your arms like a pterodactyl? Share your dinosaur dance with your family!

  3. Word Sound Exploration: Let’s explore the soft ‘c’ sound! Find words around your home or in books that have the soft ‘c’ sound, like “celebrate” or “fancy.” Write them down and practice saying them out loud. Can you think of other words with the same sound? Try creating a short story using these words and share it with someone.
