In this lesson, students explore the various ways animals move, including walking, running, crawling, slithering, jumping, flying, and swimming. Through engaging examples like dogs, turtles, frogs, and birds, learners discover the unique adaptations that allow different animals to navigate their environments. The lesson encourages curiosity about animal movement and invites students to think of additional ways animals can move, fostering a sense of wonder about the animal kingdom.
  1. How do you think a dog moves when it runs fast?
  2. Can you show me how a turtle crawls or a snake slithers?
  3. What animal do you want to be when you jump or fly?

Animals on the Move

Hey there! Let’s have some fun learning about how animals move. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Walking and Running

Look at the animals. Some animals like dogs and cats walk and run on their legs. They move fast when they run, just like you do when you play tag!

Crawling and Slithering

Some animals crawl. Think about a turtle moving slowly on the ground. Snakes are special because they slither. They move their bodies from side to side to get around. Isn’t that cool?

Jumping and Hopping

Frogs and rabbits love to jump and hop. They use their strong legs to leap high and far. Can you jump like a frog?

Flying

Birds are amazing because they can fly! They flap their wings and soar in the sky. Imagine if you could fly like a bird!

Swimming

Fish and dolphins swim in the water. They use their fins and tails to glide through the waves. Swimming is so much fun!

Other Ways to Move

Can you think of other ways animals move? Maybe climbing like a monkey or swinging like a chimpanzee? Animals are so interesting!

Time flies when we’re having fun. See you next time for more adventures with animals!

  • Can you think of an animal that moves in a way we didn’t talk about? How does it move, and why do you think it moves that way?
  • When you play outside, do you ever pretend to move like an animal? Which animal do you like to pretend to be, and why?
  • Have you ever seen an animal moving in a way that surprised you? What was it doing, and how did it make you feel?
  • Animal Movement Imitation Game: Let’s play a fun game where you pretend to be different animals! Can you walk like a cat, slither like a snake, and hop like a frog? Try to move like each animal and see how it feels. Ask your friends or family to guess which animal you are pretending to be!

  • Animal Movement Observation Walk: Take a walk outside with an adult and look for animals. Can you find a bird flying or a dog walking? How about a squirrel climbing a tree? Talk about how each animal moves and why they might move that way. Draw a picture of your favorite animal and show how it moves.

  • Creative Movement Storytime: Create a story about an animal adventure. Choose an animal and think about how it moves. Tell your story to a friend or family member, and act out the movements as you go along. For example, if your story is about a rabbit, you can hop around as you tell your tale!
