Have you ever watched a movie or cartoon with spaceships and strange creatures from other planets? It makes you wonder if aliens could be real, right? A curious SciShow Kids viewer named Parth asked us about aliens and where we might find them in the universe. Let’s explore this exciting question!
When people talk about “aliens,” they mean living things that live on planets other than Earth. But do aliens really exist? Well, we don’t know for sure. So far, scientists haven’t found any living creatures on other planets. Earth is the only planet we know of that has life.
Why haven’t we seen aliens on Mars or the Moon? It has to do with what makes Earth special. Earth has three important things that help living things survive: water, oxygen, and food.
Water: Most living things need water to survive. Earth has lots of liquid water, covering more than half of its surface. No other planet we know of has as much water.
Oxygen: Earth is surrounded by an atmosphere filled with gases, including oxygen. Many living things need oxygen to breathe. No other planet in our solar system has as much oxygen as Earth.
Food: Earth’s soil can grow many kinds of food, like grains, fruits, and vegetables. Without water and oxygen, it would be hard to grow food on other planets.
Some planets, like Mars, have a little water, mostly as ice, and a tiny bit of oxygen. But no planet has all three essentials like Earth does. That’s probably why we haven’t found signs of life elsewhere.
We can’t say for sure that there isn’t life somewhere else in the universe. We haven’t visited other planets yet, but we’re learning more every day. We have powerful telescopes that let us see planets outside our solar system. Some scientists think there might be Earth-like planets waiting to be discovered. Maybe one day, we’ll find out if life exists on them!
For now, we can imagine what aliens might look like. Who knows? They could look a bit like us!

Water Hunt: Go on a water hunt around your home or garden. Can you find different places where water is used or stored? Make a list or draw pictures of the places you find. Think about why water is important for life and how it helps plants and animals grow. Discuss with a friend or family member how Earth is special because it has so much water.
Oxygen Experiment: Try a simple experiment to understand the importance of oxygen. Take two small plants and place one in a clear plastic bag, sealing it tightly. Leave the other plant in the open air. Observe them over a few days. What differences do you notice? Talk about why oxygen is important for living things and how Earth’s atmosphere helps us breathe.
Alien Imagination: Use your imagination to create your own alien! Draw or craft an alien using materials like clay, paper, or recycled items. Think about what your alien would need to survive on its planet. Does it have special features to find water, breathe, or eat? Share your creation with others and explain how your alien lives on its planet.
