Arts and Crafts for Kids: Make Your Own Mitten!

Hi there! I’m Mila.

And I’m Kai.

Today, we’re going to have some fun making mittens inspired by a story called “The Mitten.” These mittens can hold cute little animals, and you can make them with things you probably have at home!

What You’ll Need:

  • Fabric glue
  • A printout from Vooks
  • An old sweater
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Rhinestones and pom-poms for decorating

Let’s Get Started!

Step One:

Turn your old sweater inside out and lay it flat on the table.

Step Two:

Use a marker to draw a mitten shape around your hand. This is a great way to use an old sweater that might have some stains or holes.

Step Three:

Carefully cut out the mitten shape. Make sure you cut through both layers of the sweater.

Winter is so much fun! I love having snowball fights.

My favorite winter activity is sledding!

Step Four:

Put glue around the edges of your mitten, but don’t glue the bottom. That’s where the animals will go!

Step Five:

Set your mitten aside and let it dry.

(Play some upbeat music while you wait!)

Step Six:

While your mitten dries, color the animals on your Vooks printout. You can make them as colorful as you like!

I love how the mouse got to stay in the mitten in the story. It was so sweet!

Step Seven:

Cut out the animals you colored.

Step Eight:

Now it’s time to decorate your mitten! You can add rhinestones, pom-poms, or anything else you like. Be creative!

Before we started, we turned our mitten inside out. I’m going to add some pom-poms to mine!

My design is going to be all blue and sparkly. I love it!

Step Nine:

Now, let’s see how many animals we can fit into our mittens!

One… Uh-oh, here comes a bear… Two, three… Let’s see who can fit the most animals!

Looks like it’s a tie!

How many animals do you think jumped into the mitten in the Vooks story, “The Mitten”? You’ll have to watch to find out!

  • What is your favorite part about making crafts, and why do you think it’s fun to create things with your hands?
  • Can you think of a time when you made something special out of old or used items? What did you make, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you could choose any animal to put inside your mitten, which one would it be and why? How do you think the animal would feel being inside the mitten?
  1. Animal Adventure: After making your mitten, take it outside or around your home and find small objects or toys that can fit inside. How many can you fit? Try to find objects that remind you of animals from the story. As you add each item, think about why the animals wanted to stay warm in the mitten. Discuss with a friend or family member how animals in real life keep warm during winter.

  2. Mitten Storytime: Gather your family or friends and use your mitten and animal cutouts to retell the story of “The Mitten.” Can you remember the order in which the animals entered the mitten? Try adding your own twist to the story by including new animals or characters. What would happen if a different animal tried to fit in?

  3. Winter Observation Walk: Go for a walk with a grown-up and observe how people and animals prepare for winter. Look for animals like birds or squirrels and notice what they are doing. Are they gathering food or finding shelter? Talk about how your mitten project helps you understand the importance of staying warm and cozy, just like the animals in the story.
