Have you ever wondered what it looks like underground? Even though we can’t see it, we can use our imagination to create a tiny underground world inside a jar. Let’s learn how to make one together!
First, we need some materials. We’ll use pieces of an egg carton and some tin foil. You might find these items around your house. Cut the egg carton pieces to a size that fits inside your jar. Then, wrap them with tin foil. Press the tin foil into the egg carton piece, fold it down a bit, and tear off any extra. Now you have a shiny little cave!
Next, let’s make our caves look magical! You can use silver ball cake decorations to fill your caves. Just pour them into the tin foil cups. You can also use glitter, gems, marbles, or even candy to decorate. Try using different colors like green glitter with green gems or purple glitter with a marble. You can even paint some rocks gold for a special touch!
Now, let’s put our caves inside the jar. Take a piece of modeling clay and roll it into a long worm shape. Then, make it into a circle and attach it to the top of your egg carton piece. Carefully place your hand inside the jar and press the cave against the side. Start from the bottom of the jar and work your way up. This will help your caves stick inside the jar.
Once your caves are in place, it’s time to add layers of Earth! You can use sand, small rocks, or pebbles. Start with a layer of small pebbles. Pour them into the jar and give it a gentle shake to even them out. Then, add more layers with different colors. Try using purple stones or mix blue and white stones together. Each layer will look like a part of the underground world!
Now, look at your jar! It’s filled with colorful layers and hidden treasures inside the caves. It’s like a secret world that you can see and touch. Isn’t it amazing what you can create with a little imagination?
Have fun making your own underground world in a jar and exploring the wonders beneath our feet!
Nature Walk and Observation: Take a walk in your garden or a nearby park with an adult. Look at the ground and imagine what might be happening underneath. Can you see any small holes or tunnels? What do you think lives there? Draw a picture of what you imagine the underground world looks like based on your observations.
Story Time with Your Jar: Use your underground world jar to create a story. Imagine tiny creatures living in your caves and layers. What are their names? What adventures do they have? Share your story with a friend or family member, and ask them what they think might happen next in your underground world.
Layer Experiment: Try creating a new jar with different materials. Use things like rice, lentils, or colored sand to make new layers. Predict what will happen if you shake the jar gently. Will the layers mix or stay the same? Test your prediction and observe the results. Discuss why you think the layers behaved the way they did.

We can’t see what’s underground, but we can imagine! Check this out—this is what I imagine a world underground might look like, and it fits in a jar. Let’s make one!
To start off, I’ll use these egg carton pieces and some tin foil that I found. I trim these egg carton pieces to a good size for what we want to do. Now, with some tin foil, I’m just going to wrap it up. I’ll press the tin foil into my cardboard cup like this, fold it down a little bit, and then tear it off. Perfect!
Now, it’s okay that our egg carton is showing on the back because we’re not going to see it later with all this extra tin foil. All I need to do is crumple that up. Instead of putting it in my trunk of junk, I can use it to decorate. I’ll put it right there.
Now I’m going to add some silver ball cake decorations, and these will work great! So what I want to do is just pour them right into my cup. You can decorate these in all different ways. Check these ones out! These are going to be my underground caves.
Here I have the one that I made with the tin foil and the decorative balls, but this one I used some green glitter and added some green gems. Look at this one—it’s purple glitter with a marble in the middle, and then I added some candy. And this one has gold glitter, and then I painted some rocks gold.
Now we have to figure out how to stick these into a jar. I’ll use this one right here and start off by taking a piece of modeling clay like this. Then just roll it out until it looks like a big long worm. When you’re done, it’ll look like this—that’s a perfect length! What I want to do is just roll it around like that to make a circle and then gently attach it to the top of my egg carton like that.
Now we can attach this to the inside of the jar. Tip your jar over, take off the cap, and very gently slide your hand in. It’s a good tip to start from the bottom of the jar when you’re starting out. Here’s another little tip: when you’re pressing it in, to make it a little easier, roll it over like that so we’re pressing down onto our egg cup. There we go—it sticks to the inside of the jar!
Once you’ve covered the inside of your jar with all these little caves, it’ll look like the one I started earlier. Wow, look at all this cool stuff in here! I love these colors.
Now it’s time to add the layers of Earth. You can use just one type of sand or some small rocks, but I’m going to put in a bunch of different layers. I’ll start off with a layer of small pebbles. I just pour them in, and I have my first underground layer. Once it’s poured in, I just want to give it a gentle shake to even out the first layer.
Let’s add some more layers! Here are some purple stones I got at the craft store. Again, just give it a gentle shake. Just keep adding the layers! Now I’ll mix together some blue and white stones.
Look at that! We have all these layers of stones, and in between all those stones, we have all these beautiful colors—these little caves full of treasures. It’s like a buried treasure that you can see!
