In this lesson, you will learn how to creatively transfer your favorite t-shirt design onto a skateboard using a grid method. By creating grids on both the skateboard and the t-shirt, you can accurately replicate the design square by square, making the process easier and more precise. Finally, you’ll add color to your artwork, transforming your skateboard into a personalized canvas.
  1. What is the purpose of using a grid when transferring your t-shirt design to your skateboard?
  2. How do you make sure the lines on your t-shirt grid match the lines on your skateboard grid?
  3. What colors would you choose to paint your skateboard design, and why do you think those colors would look good?

How to Put Your Favorite T-Shirt Design on a Skateboard

Have you ever wanted to put your favorite t-shirt design on your skateboard? It’s a fun and creative project that you can do using a grid! A grid helps you draw by breaking down a big picture into smaller, easier parts. Let’s learn how to do it step by step.

Creating a Grid on Your Skateboard

First, you’ll need a pencil and a ruler. The ruler helps you draw straight lines, which is important for making a grid. Since skateboards have a bit of a curve, a flexible ruler works best. You don’t need to measure the lines; just use the ruler to make sure they’re all the same width. Hold the ruler tightly to keep the lines straight.

Draw lines across the entire skateboard in both directions. This will create a grid of squares on your skateboard.

Making a Grid on Your T-Shirt

Next, you’ll make a grid on your t-shirt, but instead of using a pencil, you’ll use elastics. This way, you won’t ruin your shirt. Start by sliding a piece of cardboard under the shirt, right under the picture you want to copy. Pull the shirt tight over the cardboard to keep it smooth.

Now, stretch elastics over the shirt to create lines. Use your ruler to make sure the elastics are the same width as the lines on your skateboard. Keep adding elastics until you have a grid on your t-shirt.

Transferring the Design

Now it’s time to transfer the design from your t-shirt to your skateboard. Keep your t-shirt close to your skateboard so you can easily see the design. Line up the grid on the t-shirt with the grid on the skateboard. This makes it easier to draw because you can focus on one square at a time.

Start with one square. Draw exactly what you see in that square onto the matching square on your skateboard. If it’s a moon or some simple lines, just copy them. Cover the other squares with your hand or a piece of paper to help you focus on one square at a time.

Adding Color to Your Design

Once you’ve drawn all the squares, it’s time to paint! Your skateboard is like a canvas, and you can use any colors you like. Paint the bat, the castle, the moon, or whatever design you have. You can even paint over the grid lines to make your artwork stand out even more.

Safety Tip

Remember, never ride on your skateboard art unless it has wheels! Enjoy your cool, colorful skateboard design!

  • Have you ever tried drawing or painting something on your own? What was it, and how did it make you feel?
  • Think about your favorite t-shirt design. Why do you like it, and how would you feel if you could see it on your skateboard or another item you use every day?
  • What other things do you think you could decorate using a grid, like we did with the skateboard? Can you think of any fun designs you might want to try?
  1. Grid Art Exploration: Create a simple grid art project at home. Use a piece of paper and draw a grid using a ruler. Choose a simple design, like a smiley face or a star, and draw it in one of the squares. Then, try to copy the design into the other squares of the grid. Notice how breaking down the design into smaller parts makes it easier to draw. Share your grid art with your family and explain how you used the grid to help you.

  2. Nature Grid Hunt: Go outside and find a small area in your garden or a park. Use sticks or strings to create a grid on the ground. Look closely at each square of your grid and observe what you see. Are there different types of leaves, rocks, or insects? Draw or write down what you find in each square. Discuss with a friend or family member how the grid helped you notice details you might have missed otherwise.

  3. Design Transfer Challenge: Choose a simple design from a book or magazine and try transferring it onto a piece of paper using a grid. First, draw a grid over the design in the book or magazine using a transparent sheet or tracing paper. Then, draw a similar grid on your paper. Try to copy the design square by square onto your paper. Reflect on how the grid helped you in transferring the design accurately.

Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

I can put my favorite t-shirt design on my skateboard, and one of the ways to do this is by creating a grid. A grid can help you draw by dividing a larger picture into smaller sections, making it simpler to replicate. Using my pencil and ruler, I’ll create a grid by making lines going in both directions. These flexible rulers are great for this because the skateboard has a bit of a curve. I’m not measuring out my lines; I’m just using the ruler as a guide so that all my lines are the same width as the ruler. It’s important to hold your ruler tightly to keep the lines straight.

Now, I need to cover the entire skateboard with lines, which will create a grid. Once I have the grid on my skateboard, I need to make the same grid on my t-shirt. To avoid ruining the shirt, I’ll use a little trick. Instead of a pencil, I’m going to use elastics.

I’ll start with a piece of cardboard and slide it under the shirt. The key is to position the cardboard directly underneath the picture on my shirt. Once it’s in place, I can tuck the extra fabric underneath. Another tip is to ensure the shirt is pulled tight over the cardboard. Now, I’m ready to add the elastics. The elastics will stretch over the shirt and create the lines, so I don’t have to use a pencil.

After placing a few elastics, I’ll go back to my ruler to make sure the elastics match its width. This way, it will align with the grid on my skateboard. Now that I have three elastics in place, I want to cover the whole shirt, and when I’m finished, I’ll have a grid on my t-shirt.

Next, we’re ready to transfer the design onto the skateboard. I’ll keep my t-shirt close to my skateboard to make it easier to replicate the picture. Here’s another tip: line up the grid on the t-shirt with the grid on the skateboard. This grid makes it much easier to draw because I can focus on one square at a time.

Let’s start with this square. I’ll draw exactly what I see in this square onto the corresponding square on my skateboard. That moon wasn’t too difficult to draw. Moving on to the next square, I’ll cover the other squares with my hand or a piece of paper to focus on one at a time. This square has a few simple lines, so I’ll copy them.

Now that I have all the squares drawn, I can paint it any way I want. My skateboard is like a canvas with a cool picture on it, and I love to use vibrant colors. Check out what I did with this one! It has a really cool design with lots of great colors. I painted the bat, the castle, and the moon, and I even painted over the grid in the background, which enhances the overall look.

Lastly, here’s an important safety tip: never ride on a work of art unless it has wheels!
